laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif Guess for me, thanks God that I was bless, each work that I did brings me to higher ground. never turned back, tho I have the chance.

It was tough at first, remembering bargaining with my boss, 3 months into my work, to hold my pay when he wants to retrench me during the 97 crisis, but managed to prove to him after a further 3 months.

I got one friend who just finished his contract with SAF last year.. now working as an interior designer in his own firm. Take home is double what he used to earned with SAF I think..

My own WO also has ORDed last 2 years ago. Just saw him when I went to a pub in Joo Chiat.. was quite shocked later when I know that he's the owner of the pub. Seems he's doing quite well though.

SBS bus drivers nowadays are also known as bus captains.

The word "captain" is abused liao. [shakehead]

[laugh] u are extremely bias toward them, give them a break

frankly on a serious note, if not because of this group of people who sacrifice their youth who is going to shape our younger generation singaporean.

we all agree 2yr is waste of time but it does help to shape us in our character.

guys who have not been thru n.s will not appreciate warm of the home, motherly love. etc...(or rather tend to take it for granted).

from an employer perspective, stating saf/polic experience does not add any advantage but rather disadvantage. is tough to re-shape their mindset to blend into the outside life.

The only advantage in NS was that it opened our eyes wide to the inefficiency of the civil service on the whole and that the only way up the ladder was to suck up to your bosses.

But 2 1/2 years to way too long to see all these sh*t. By the time we ORD, our female peers become bosses or even mothers.

NSF was 2.5 yrs for commanders and 2 yrs for enlistees. Now, it's all aligned to 2 yrs due to better and more focused training.

Still, we have to take things in perspective. 2 yrs vs the entire working life up to age 62 is really not that big a deal. As pointed out by others, National Svc is a quick way to grow up and face realities.

As in any large organisation, I guess there're inefficiencies. But again, we have to take things in perspective. As for all the rantings on inefficiencies, have we noticed our armed forces are always the first around our region to be able to respond to real disasters? Remember the Tsunami? The SARS episode? Or how about the female journalist that survived a terrifying night when unrest broke out in Timor Leste under the protection of our Armed Forces, followed by a successful evacuation?

That made such a deep impression on the journalist that she wrote her thanks, and she was a self proclaimed cynic of the SAF before that! Suddenly, she felt thankful for our boys in green.

So yes, we all like to gripe and complain. But we should also remember more than that. Many NSmen, upon completing their 10 yr NS cycle, commented those were the best times of their lives.

Not forgetting how they put down terrorists swiftly in a SIA plane with passengers. Again, it is not easy to earn the bars, it should at least command some basic respect.

Are ex-SAF regular officers sought after in the private sector? If someone writes that in his resume, will they look more attractive to potential employers?

Any one worked with ex-officers before? Do they rate highly in terms of work ethics, maturity and analytical skills?

LOL, one guy ex-NSF so call Army Officer made a mistake in his work and was told off. [shakehead] And he was so upset he went to toilet to cry [bigcry][bigcry] and still under probation.

Oi...you only see one side of the coin la, not all like that la, well, actually, some units, not all.

I know, once I'm out of my unit, basket, sure kana trouble one. NS is what you make of it.

My son in Navy now, enjoying every moment of it.
