"More say ERP helps with congestion

WHEN a new set of Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries begin operation, a chorus of complaints is heard and jokes - ERP gantries drawn above lift doors - are circulated freely on the Internet.

But the reality is that more Singaporeans now believe that this means of congestion control actually gives them a smoother ride to work.

About 26 per cent of drivers polled this year said ERP had reduced traffic compared to 15 per cent last year.

Read Maria Almenoar's full story in Monday's edition of The Straits Times."

This news report really takes the cake. 26% say ERP reduced traffic.... KNN, so why don't they say 74% say it doesn't? No wonder we still number 144 in the Press Freedom index. Flip here flip there like our prata man

Another way of reporting the news..

"Less say ERP do not help ease congestion

I think because economy downturn, more people taking world class transport, hence less cars on the road..

Only 26% says ERP reduces congestion means ERP is not expensive enough! There's still room to go up until 50% says yes.

I'm one of those who would say yes (but I'm not polled), because ERP works for me -- I avoid ERP areas whenever possible.

I saw a documentary a while ago about Seoul traffic system. After the seeing, I felt that we Singapore are not the number 1 in many aspects already. Seoul is a place that has got more cars and serious jam occurs every day. They did a major overhaul on their traffic system and their trains system can evacuate a stadium of visitors within minutes after a soccer match. All cars/taxis were fitted with gps that tells them where are the jam and the device is capable of routing it via alternative route. All the taxi drivers finds it useful. They didn

There are many ways to manage a traffic system.

Obviously, the easy way out here to price the less well-off off the road.

Some must be thinking, how nice if only the elites can own the road.

china system of controlling congestion is fairer without regards to the rich or poor.. they simply banned the odd and even car plates numbers on different days of the week! [:p]

oops..well the rich could buy a few cars with odd and even no plates to drive on different days of the week too! [sly]

The 26% are people who don't drive?

Of coz there are better ways. Technology nowadays allows you to manipulate traffic to maximize usage and minimize congestions. But it takes effort and investment.

You need to have a master control of the traffic situation by monitoring cameras, speed sensors, how the roads are designed, where the congestion occurs and time of day. Once you have the full situation, traffic lights can change accordingly on demand or some other methods.

This is done, I believe somewhere in UK.

By contrast, ERP is simple money-making machinery. Put up gantries as and when you like. Change the charges with a push of a button...simple no brainer....as long as you don't care where the rest of the traffic you pushed off to .

Traffic has to go somewhere right? Not swept under the carpet, and out of sight , out of mind.

What happened usually in survey is that, they will just take the positive of the result.

eg:

Do you think ERP is useful?

1: Definitely No 2: Maybe 3: Yes 4: Definitely Yes

So they will just take anything "Maybe" and above and treat it as a yes.

Sad case.
