Hey forum mates,

say u were cruising at 130km/hr on the NSH for 1hour.

when u decide to overtake someone, do u turn off O/D (drop to 3rd gear) and then overtake?

i tried that on my picnic and there's a violent vibration momentarily.

(RPM is still decent at 5k.)

the car was fine afterwards, upping gear back to 4th gear and continue its 130km/hr cruising

what is the issue?

Neutral Newbie

no issue wad....when u drop gear at 5000rpm, vibration is normal...

uactually u sneed not turn off od, jus step on it more and it will autmatically accerlate, if nt enough power, it will drop gear itself.

turn off O/D more control of when the down gear shift happens mah

but its a bit disappointing leh

i thought somehow toyota will make the gearshift as seamless as possible

its quite a violet jerk....

and i thought my gearbox kaput momentarily....

i oni switch off OD at speeds ard 70-90 kmh to do quick overtaking. droppin a gear at 130kmh will bring abt alot of din n not much power. best is to time ur overtakin well, gain more speed b4 u switch lane n overtake. jus step more will do.

wow u bros really enlighten me

i have driven for so long and never experience such things before

a new learning point i guess for everybody here in this forum!

so its simply the case of,

1) low powered car,

2) 4 speed gearbox,

3) high speed

4) an attempt to overtake (thinking too highly of one's car)

i always thought that such things only happen to underpowered picanto/chery qq/spark etc.

now i understand that at a sufficiently high speed, many below 2litre cars will also experience such jerk during a gear drop

At 130 kph, I see no reason why you off OD for overtaking. What makes you think it dropped to 3rd gear? 3rd gear got max speed and it may be less than 130 kph for normal car.

O/D button will cause downshift??? As what was mentioned, I should think the car's transmission control unit to be clever enough to decide whether it is a safe speed to downshift.

Or did you manually shift it to 3rd?

Anyway, don't worry lah.... I don't think anything's broken. My auto gear shifts are probably much worse than yours and its still going strong after that many years. (I get violent klunks when engine not warmed up, or lesser klunks when I stop too fast [sweatdrop] )

Not anymore (used to be 1.6SS auto).... hogged it off some 5 years ago..... but strangely, that car didn't give me any problems.... just that it was really underpowered and boring to drive. [:p]
