I am so satisfied with SGH

Few weeks back, mum revealed to me that she will be going for elective surgery to replace her right knee.... ok, then she said it will cost 3.8k, with 2k in cash and rest up to 80% medisave deduction. Okay, being the filial son, I promise that I will bear the cost for her surgery.....

Went to SGH for pre-op appointment, where there will be blood test, EGC test, x-rays, consult the doctors etc etc....

Sat down with the consellor and started signing papers and ready to pay... then the lady behind the counter said she will check if mum got insurance... after a few clicks on the the computer, yes she is insured with Income shield.... she did not opt out... so the lady behind the counter submitted the estimate charges to NTUC, and the news was that most of the cost of the surgery will be covered, only a few hundred dollars remained.. okay, I was happy, I could pay up the few hundred definitely... then looking closely again, it was revealed that the few hundred dollars can be covered with my Medisave.... end of the day, not a single cent will be paid in cash.... hahhaaa... save me a couple of Ks.....

Well, I thought the pre-op test will take me the whole day... but it was all completed in 2.5 hours... how efficient..... so satisfied...

SGH is a good hospital. I didn't realise how good it is until I went to other nursing homes. Even though you pay a lot, the service is very very poor.

Optional,non emergency surgery. [:p]

My point is, a good hospital can have good service, wonderful state of the art equipment.

But if u look at the patient, they dont like hospital

i beg to differ on sgh. went there last week to see ent specialist cos i keep hearing a clicking sound in my ear whenever there is air pressure change (e.g. swallow, talk, etc).

before see doc, have to sign to agree to consultancy charge of $87! my turn came, they sent me to do hearing test. after dat, only get to see specialist. he listen to my complain, ask me to sit in a examination chair and did ear photography (or at least dats what i call it cos scope goes into ear, he takes photo).

then he spray some nasal medicine and ask me to wait 15 mins. 15 mins later, nurse called me and i went back in. tis time round, he took nose photo. yeah scope goes up the nose.

then he told me, my ear and nose channel is ok. hearing good! nothing wrong with me. then he said "the clicking has no effect on your hearing. try not to think about it and it will be ok". yup, he discharged me from ent and i went to pay up. 3xx bucks in total [furious]

but hey, they gave me the photo as souvenier [:p]

luckily full covered by company so i dun mind paying but i wanted to have the clicking solved, not to have confirmation my hearing is ok. sigh

Suprising, i had exactly the same problem as u was refered to the specialist at sgh by my company's doctor and gone thru the same process as u. But the specialist who attended me was extremely good and nice. Some how after 3 visits my ear is ok no more problem until now. Like u also, my company paid everything.

I guess this is what typically happens also when you go to A&E with some symptoms but not sure what's wrong. Most of the time the 'doctor' cannot diagnose anything (or perhaps they have a hunch, but nowadays scared of liability problems so...) and just try to reduce the symptoms, and send you home.

The signing for consultancy charge is always necessary when you don't have a referral from polyclinic, etc. But usually the specialist and subsequent treatment you get is good, well worth the $. Not sure if you can get the same standard with a referral and subsidized charges... [lipsrsealed]

I am a regular at SGH, SNEC and previously TTSH. Just visited SGH on 02/12/08 for my regular appointment. Generally, their service standards are good and frenly.

Visited RH quite a few times b4 being transferred to SGH, RH service standards are even higher!!! Even for a simple blood test procedure. But u also got to pay more lah. [laugh]

My mother is a pension holder, I never worried abt her medical expenses. Once she stayed in TTSH for two weeks and I accompanied her when she was discharged. We went to the admin office to do the outprocessing, no need to pay a single cent, everything under govt. [thumbsup]

I beg to differ too. My children are born in SGH. Long story short, at the registration, I asked to pay via credit card. They said no, can only charge me only up to $800. I argued for a while and well after my children are born, on going home day, the problem came up. Once the doctor say we can go home, we are would be criminals, sort of. Being first time father, I wished to be my wife and new born children. Hell no, the payment office keep ringing me every 10min to settle the bill. Even when I did, queuing for 30min to pay, and they even called me while I was queuing, twice. On the way home, while driving, they also kept calling. It was madness because I never answered without a hands-free. I swear it spoilt the joy of being a first time father. Second child, same thing but I was more prepared for the calls, I 'F' everyone that tell me to pay when I already did. To top it off, they send me a very aggressive debt collector agency for a later bill from my mother that was settled way before. The amount, a lousy $25. Even when I protest my innocence, no apologies where ever given. I wrote long letters condemning their practices, maybe they have changed now. Other than the payment office, medical professional from SGH are always solid.

Good to hear appreciative comments about Singapore hospitals once in a while. Sure there will be cases when things go wrong, depts mis-communicate, rude staff etc but this kind of things happen everywhere in any industry.

I actually feel good when I get a bill and part of it has been paid thru my MediSave and some cash (not too much of course!). It just means that the medical system is commercially viable and will continue to function for decades to come.

I used to think that free health care is fantastic until I went to live in the UK. The whole setup is very low standard and many people don't get to see their doctors for a long time. But yes, it is free. You just die before you get the treatment you need. No wonder many UK residents fly to Germany and France for surgery when they can wait no longer.

now they got a lot of customer feedback forms and it form part of the service apprisal, indirectly affecting their bottomline if I'm not wrong.

Anyway, the people, from cleaners to prof are quite good. but at times, they tend to rush things but that's because they are overworked.

If we set our expectation correctly, it will definitely be a pleasant experience.

just that some chose to act like king when paying nuts.. only peanuts is worth more

When my dad was in and out of SGH due to cancer, and also been transferred to various wards and various blocks, i more or less have quite a lot of encounters with SGH staffs and their administration..

Basically they are good on the whole. SOmetimes waiting time for admission can be long depending on your luck really..

Nurses and care wise, it depends on wards and who is the sister. Some very on, some quite jialut..

Can you imagine once, in the wee hrs, a nurse actually called us and said my dad in bad condition, scared the sh!t outta the whole family, worried and all, and realized nurse called WRONG FAMILY????
