overdriven your amp?

Is this a new problem recently? Or this is your newly installed amp?

Edit: Oops just noted its a new amp. Probably good idea to go back to your installer. Unless it's yourself. Is it running in bridge mode?

Sounds like your amp has gone into protection mode to prevent the amp from frying. Where do you house your amp? Is it under-power to effectively drive your speakers? You may be straining it.

From the description you gave, the problem may lie with your amplifier trying to drive your sub at a load it is not designed for, e.g: when two channels on your amp are bridged and can only support a 4 ohm load and your sub is wired for 2 ohms, your amp needs to supply more current to pump the sub and will overheat much faster. The auto protect mode will then cut in, which explains why the sound suddenly goes off.

It is good to ask your installer if the sub has a single or double voice coil. If the sub has two voice coils, is it wired for 1, 2 or a 4 ohm load? If the sub is wired for 1 or 2 ohms and your amp when bridged can only drive a 4ohm load, please either change sub or get a mono-block amp (and in the process you can screw the installer). All mono-blocks can drive 4, 2 and for some mono-blocks, 1 ohm loads.

But if the sub is wired for a 4 ohm load, then either the amp is faulty or the power cable from your battery to the amp needs to be looked at.

Hope the problem will be solved soon!

pls refer to Eddy216's explanation on bridge mode. Since you mentioned it's used to drive subwoofer, there might be a possibility that your installer connected the speakers in a bridge mode. If you use normal mode, the power will be halved. Or should we say, in bridge mode, the power is doubled.

If the speakers + amp came from the same shop, they probably should have known this combination setup will cause the amp to operate at threshold or exceed.

I suggest you don't bridge it and see if you can accept the sound. It's probably an expectation issue.

oh! thanks for the info bro.. from what i see, i think wad u said might be true.. maybe the 2 or 4 ohm thingy.. i got a clearer picture now.. but i hope thats not the issue cos as u said have to change e sub.. btw i'm currently using bazooka basstube.. any idea its 2 ohm or 4 ohm?

the sub is not from the same shop.. actually i still dun really get the bridge mode thingy.. but from what u say, if i dun bridge it, the speakers will be powered from the hu itself? and only the sub will be drawing power from the amp?

How is your system run in the first place? Is your HU driving your front passive component while the same RCA is being split to hook up to the 4-ch amp to drive your sub? What is the spec of your sub and sub amp? What Eddy said earlier may be very true. Express Motion did your install is it?

As what Sarong1 said, we need to be sure of how your system is setup so that we can better isolate where the problem might be. Right now we seem to be getting more questions than answers.
