i guys,

My car is a Rio5 1.4L, mileage about 36,000km.

I was driving today when suddenly, the engine checklight turned on, and my car and engine felt very wobbly and like no power.

So i floored the accelerator to get home.

Upon reaching, it smelt like something was burnt. But engine oil, coolant was ok, no leaking oil also.

I called Kia, and the guy asked me what petrol i use.

I've been using Shell 92 for the past 2 yrs, sometimes 95 when i can't find 92.

He said because i use 92, the ECU sensor got used to it when it doesn't burnt properly or something like that

So now the sensor screwed up, and that's why the ECL is on.

Can anyone explain what he's talking about, cos i have no idea.

What should i do now?

Help appreciated!

sounds like your spark plugs need changing, esp if you've not changed them b4...typical cause of the ECL.

not sure about the smell ..could be due to your flooring the acclerator too much and high reving the engine , causing the higher than usual temp.

dun worry, firstly check your manual make sure the min requirement fuel is at least ron92.

secondly if still under warranty , should be able to get them to change for you a new 1.

please do get it check . i am sure many people do fill in different grades of fuel also.

should be the hardware is faulty rather than what fuel u use. =)

Send the car in for repair immediately! I am no car expert but I've encountered a similar problem with a Hyundai Accent years ago. Check PM.

What you just did, floored the accelerator when the engine check warning light was on, was very risky. Without knowing what was the cause of the fault, you could have destroy your engine completely and risk facing a huge bill.

Best to let the workshop check asap.

I think it is perfectly alright for your Rio to run on ron92. Please check your car manual. If the it state min is ron92, then I don't see anything wrong with that.

"He said because i use 92, the ECU sensor got used to it when it doesn't burnt properly or something like that

The sensor he refering to is the Knock sensor and this sensor job is to sense for pinging/knocking in the engine. Pinging/knocking occured when low octane fuel is used then the recommended grade. It never get used to anything and should always sense and inform ECU what to do.

CEL (Check Engine Light) normally turn on when the Oxygen sensor failed to work or not providing the voltage within acceptable range. Base on yr mileage it is not likely be the case of a failed sensor.

under warranty? Go back agent check.

ECL has many possible issues. Best to let a OBDII scanner to find out the specific error code. Can range from spark plug, plug wires, MAF sensor, ignition coils, etc. Mine was ignition coils. Replaced them and ECL went away. Mine is an Aveo BTW.

Call Kia, tell them CEL is on. Ask them what you should do. Ask them if need to tow to them. Just follow their instruction.

Don't tell them you keep revving when the CEL is on. Tell them you stop driving and called them once you see the CEL.

Anyway, my guess is a blow head gasket. Have you done any mod?

This is definitely not normal wear and tear and should be covered by warranty.

The petrol talk is all bull.

Good luck!

I had exactly 100% (smell included) the same experience about 2 weeks back. It is very very likely to be the Sotong...this is misfiring - instead of 4 cylinder working, 1 of them salah timing, thats why u r experiencing wobbly engine and no power. the engine light also comes out. change the sotong lah, i also changed my spark plug as well. now my car back to normal and sparks well. most of the time, this kind of problem may not be as complicated as what we think..

Thanks guys for all the replies so far...

It still is under warranty, less than 3 yrs old.

Yup, i pump Shell 92 99% of the time.. i always thought the petrol talk was all bull.. and i still think so..

VIcz: How much did it cost to change your cylinder??

Sigh, i hope i don't go broke over this!

Do one last thing b4 you send your car.

Disconnect your car battery for aout 20 mins. then conect back. This will enable the ECU to reset. If engine gone (most probably) but power stillnot there, change your spark plugs

[laugh] U can't change the cylinder. Cylinder is part of the engine block whereby there are four(in your case), the pistons move up & down inside each cylinder.

The "sotong" he was refering to is the charge distributor which is connected to your spark plugs. See the four thick wires connected to the top of your engine block. The assembly looks somewhat like a "sotong" to some ppl. [laugh]

I don't think i have changed my spark plugs before (sorry, i'm totally clueless about cars and their engines.

I tried to start my car just now, can start, and ECL is still on,

Car can move, but no power, like running on 70% power like that.

Sounds like what Vicz said...

So should i change my spark plugs?
