what sort of people can afford F1 ticket cannot afford to fork out $5 for the cab fare?

Ans: probably those who got free tickets.

and those who rant in this forum, probably will not be going for the race afterall....

Your reply is indeed a great one. One replys to all.. That's y alot of ppl say sillyporeans luv complaining.

For myself, I dun even care abt the surcharge cos I m not even the least interested in our low cost F1 race where a track is not even required to be built. I know there are such similar races in other countries but it is a clear fact that we pull a fast one by not investing in a track yet has revenue.

If you think this $5 surcharge is bad, the hotels near the city area even more jia lark, inflating their charges during the race period. End up with terrible occupancy rate and have to lelong last week with up to 70% discount. Looks like the foreigners are smarter than us sillyporeans afterall ... [laugh]

a certain taxi company is imposing a $5 surcharge for rides taken during the F1 period. is this greed at work?

Wow that is great...that shows not everybody is a sucker for that aspect.

I'm rather sure most of the locals f1 supporters who will take cab on the race weekend will probably be ignorant of the 5 dollar surcharge, and grudgingly pay the extra, only to write in the ST forum on monday with a fiery letter.

I m pretty sure you will be wrong in this area. When it comes to $, sgporeans will not be ignorant, we r smart sometimes but can be in the wrong way..trying to save peanuts when we are already spending so much money on something. Eg. Drive big big cars but become extremely light foot to squeeze as much mileage as possible, gov launch CNG straight away opt for it w/o doing situational analysis

For the few who know of the extra surcharge, most will steer clear of the cabs, unless the economic satisfaction is greater than that indignation of being screwed by their GLCs.

I will still stick to my guns, then, that the surcharge is poorly implemented, ill thought out because it is too last minute, too opportunistic, and too simple a solution for a fat paycheck executive.

For this part, I agree that it becomes sort of opportunistic that they decide it at the last min making every chances to make moola, cant help feeling the same way also.

Other than economics dictating human behaviour, there are other disciplines which are effective in modifying human actions.

MIW better wake up from thinking the little economics textbook is enough to run a country. Lee Kuan Yew doesn't think so, but sadly, his successor does, and we are still reeling from the aftermath.

Y r we still reeling from the aftermath? Bcos we have no one else to blame but ourselves when we are jumping for joy when we see our MP only once in every 5 yrs. U know for some, absence makes the heart grows fonder so the same vote cast again so that we can see them once in another 5 yrs.

I think the only real greedy ones are the hoteliers .... charging astronomically exorbitant room rates (can you imagine 3-4 star hotel asking for SGD1000+++ + F1 CESS per room night with minimum 3 night rule),... now kicking themselves coz they wl not be able to fill the rooms now.

what's more, it really hurts the country's image cause those who come here knows the market rate for hotel rooms here. when they are asking 5 times the normal price, even the well heel smells a rat.

This is only the 1st GP here, and we're not exactly Monte Carlo (our Casino is not up yet)... so, better keep their feet firmly on the ground than thinking we'll see lots of stars/starlets coming for the over celebrated race.

My friend, you do have a point, but singaporeans are a funny lot. You'll be surprised about how many out there are ignorant of the 5 dollar surcharge during the race weekend.

One simple example comes from the singaporean who recently complained about getting caught speeding on KPE. Almost half a year, and there are still people who do not know about the 70km/h limit, and that there are live speedcams installed.
