STOMPer Peter sent in a video to show how old tyres, which are kept in storage and unused for many years, may blow up and endanger lives of drivers and other motorists.

He says: "I would like to share it with our fellow Singaporeans to equip them with some knowledge on what to look out for when they are buying a set of new tires for their cars."

Just out of curiousity, do you change your spare tyres when they expires (not those donut type, my spare is the same as the stock tyres that fitted on my ride).

assuming your spare tyre is new and has never used before, visually and physically inspect the tyre for any cracklines, hardness. if there is, advise to change. there is no need for u to buy new tyre for the spare...when you change your current tyres be it 2 or 4, choose the best one out of the worst to act as spare...

I've upgraded since so its not possible to use my current size for my spare, guess if there is cracklines or the rubber gets hard then i'll have to change my spare.

good info. i nominated this for highlighted posting [;)]

got some issues though, for singapore motorists

1. does 6 years expiry from manufacturing date apply in SG? our weather is more humid, so the tyre should not crack so fast. BUT our weather is hotter. personally, my comfort level is 4 years from date of manufacture but in practice it's impossible to reach that

2. so far in my limited tyre shopping, i didn't come across any tyres more than 2 yrs old. some pple on the forum have reported getting older tyres but i don't think they are more than 4 yrs old. this compares favourably with the USA tyre shops selling tyre above 6 yrs or even 10 yrs old [dizzy][dizzy][hur]

one more thing, thread separation is VERY COMMON in SG and MY. but i think it happens more for goods veh.

i always see strips of tyre thread by the road. now i know that they are not results of blowouts but rather, separated threads [sweatdrop][sweatdrop]
