Turbocharged

I'm thinking of purchasing a plasma TV from USA knowing full well that it runs on 110V while we use 240V.

The questions:

1) Is it safe (for the plasma TV) to use a step up transformer for this case?

2) What happens if the transformer breaks down? Will the plasma TV be damaged by the jump in voltage?

Thanks.

u r in US now? why not get it from local as the pricing now quite competitive.

if u get a step up transformer, i dun see problem for the plasma tv. but as your point 2 mention, there is a high risk of the power surge in the event of breaking down of transformer or other similar events.

Am not in US.

Reason I'm getting from US is because its the 9th generation Pioneer Kuro. Its not available here YET but I reckon the price will be more than S$10,000 once its launched here. I can get it for about S$4000++ from US.

most computer has a switch that let you switch from 220 to 110. flick that switch and watever happen will answer your question (2)....

You'll need a step-down isolated (or double-wound) transformer whereby the primary & secondary separated.

While US operates 115V, the appliance itself can be dual voltage via switch (115/230) or auto voltage(100-240).

Bro I think you also need to know the capacity of the step down transformers in terms of KVA too.

I think when the transformer breaks down, the power is usually cut and all you need is a new transformer.

Cheers.
