No ERP gantries for CTE tunnel for now

By Valarie Tan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 27 August 2008 1747 hrs

SINGAPORE : There are currently no plans to set up Electronic Road Pricing gantries in the underground portion of the Central Expressway, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Teo Ser Luck in Parliament on Wednesday.

This is because it does not pose as much of a safety risk as the nine-kilometre-long Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE).

But if the safety situation changes or travel speeds fall below the threshold level of 45 kilometres per hour, gantries will be installed and activated.

Mr Teo was responding to questions from MPs on whether gantries would be built on other expressways in anticipation of slower traffic flows.

He explained that as three-quarters of the nine-kilometre KPE is underground, the impact of an incident there would "multiply many fold" if traffic is congested.

So authorities are making the upfront investment of some S$24 million to build the 16 gantries first, even though not all of them will be activated when the KPE opens in September.

Mr Teo said: "The rationale is unique to the KPE in view of the safety concerns and is not applied to arterial roads or other expressways on the surface.

"The 16 gantries... (are) on the entries and exits... So based on the distance and where there are exits, we place the installation of the gantries accordingly..." - CNA/ms

So.... even before KPE open fully in September, they expect a lots of accidents to cause conjestion and thereby, calls for 16 ERP's for that stretch of Expressway ...... [sweatdrop][sweatdrop][sweatdrop]

I quote this sentence : "Mr Teo said: "The rationale is unique to the KPE in view of the safety concerns and is not applied to arterial roads or other expressways on the surface."

Shouldn't safety concern in driving is installing speed cameras rather 16 ERP's gantries...... [dizzy][dizzy][dizzy]

exactly. if they lift the speed limit or increase it, the congestion might ease.

just like the NEL, when it was launched, they remove all the other parallel route buses so that ridership of NEL improves even when ultimate travelling time increased.

They are now doing it on KPE... but on the other extreme, because the KPE will reduce the revenue collected from CTE (almost parallel with KPE) ... so, its either they put gantries on KPE or remove gantries from CTE. After investing so much, its definitely a must to recoup the cost... so, impose toll in the name of traffic control, safety, and what have you.

So if pple dun use the KPE, there won't be any congestion.

So if there isn't any congestion, the ERP gantries won't be turned on.

So where do they recoup these losses which they estimated earlier for the erecting of these gantries?? Deduct from the "authorities" salaries??? [shakehead]

Be prepared to pay more in the form of whatever tax.... [thumbsdown]

I think they should be fully commissioned based lah. Whoever performs and show results will get the appropriate payment..... [laugh][laugh]

Singapore mentality is money can solve almost any issue even child bearing.

But hey, if the ERP crap works, then you will soon see ERP gantry replacing all the speed cameras. That way, speeding or no speed you still pay and pay.

I am just wondering out loud whether more accident occurs before a ERP gantry or a speed camera. Or maybe they already solve this arguement through the new cashcard that auto-top up.. the conspiracy theory that is appearing in my head frightens me..... [sweatdrop]

dont worry,, they will come out with some kiddy reason to justify the ERP activation even with no jam.... [hur]
