King_of_abalone Clutched August 13, 2008 Share August 13, 2008 This is hilarious. One of the biggest tell-tale signs: Some of them put their Christian names as last names and dialect names as first names. Many of them also put the last word of their given names as last names. First name: Given name. Last name: Surname. Many Singaporeans have no idea what first and last names are. So for example, a guy with the name of Tan Tee Khoon where Tan is the surname, stupidly put Khoon as his surname, and ended up with Khoon, Tan Tee on his degree. the jokers who got it wrong: Patrick, Oh Boon Sai Singapore MA (This guy actually applied twice and got his own name right the 2nd time round ) Meng, Tee Wee Singapore PhD Wende, Clarence Du Singapore DBA Seng, Lee Boon Singapore MAH Thiam, Yeo Chin Singapore PhDH Sunny, Tew Singapore Wai, Kwok Yau Singapore MBA David, Tan Leng Huat Singapore BBA Christopher, Fong Kong Onn Singapore BA Khuen, Lee Wai Singapore BS Kiong, Goh Seng Singapore BBA Hun, Teo Wee Singapore BA Huat, Ng Kwee Singapore BBA Khoon, Tan Tee Singapore MDiv Keong, See Soon (Raymond) Singapore PhD

Sony 1st Gear August 13, 2008 Share August 13, 2008 (edited) not really.. in ang moh places, they usually put your first name in front follow by your last name.. but then, being chinese with names like Tan Tee Khoon, they would though Khoon is the surname and Tan being the first name. as for Tee, they would tot it's middle name and not impt so put behind. Thus, technically, it's correct. My transcript are also written with my first name in front with the last name behind. However, before the convocation, I went to the board and request to have my Last name in front for my cert. So in the context of UK, US and Aus, it's not really wrong. Drive_carcar Clutched August 14, 2008 Share August 14, 2008 True. You also need to check the FTs here. Some of these ang mo gui come over with phds and mbas but when it comes to action, they seem to know nuts. They are like all talk no action type. Let's put things into perspective. Just because a person has a degree doesn't mean he / she know their stuff. Conversely, just because a person don't have a degree doesn't mean he / she is not the best fit for the job. The piece of ass wipe is only a door opener, in the end, it's all about delivering results and performance. One of the biggest misconception is, if a person is in management level, he / she should know everything. That's simply not true. A good manager only know at a high level stuff about their trade, and they get things done through their people and deliver the results. People who expects their managers to be experts in their field are destined to be subordinates, until they change their mindset.
Roborovskii 4th Gear August 14, 2008 Share August 14, 2008 You read too much into my short statement. This angmo ex-collegue is supposed to be a technical expert with certificates (deg+masters+certifications) to back him up. Thing is he doesn't even seem to comprehend the basic concepts that first year student need to know to pass their exams. Most of us who were in the industry for over 10 years got a rude shock when working with him. We were really thinking if his certs were fake, but we never checked. In the end he was booted for bad conduct.
King_of_abalone Clutched August 14, 2008 Share August 14, 2008 It is true that first names are placed in front of last names in Ang Moh countries in most circumstances ex official documents, but here we are talking about official documents. In official documents, surnames are usually placed in front, followed by a comma. This is to facilitate indexing. In the UK, US, and Aus, when a name is placed in front with a comma after that, it is most certainly a surname (or last name, as surnames are termed in the US). It happens in roll call lists and directory indexes. Given names are not usually put in front in indexes. If they did that, can you imagine how many continuous pages of Johns and Marys there will be in the phone book! I do not know which university you graduated from but most degree certs I have seen place the graduate's surname (last name) in front, followed by a comma, then the given name (first name). It is true that you can request for the university to change the positioning of your name. However it is very clear to people looking at a cert that the name which precedes the comma is the surname. When these idiots applied to a degree mill, they apparently did not bother with the details. Either that or they filled in the form wrongly, being confused by the terms. Sony 1st Gear August 14, 2008 Share August 14, 2008 Not sure which degree you have seen but I'm certain degrees given out by some of the top Uni in UK are usually written with the first name followed last name. However each have their own ways of placing the name due to whatever tradition or naming convention they have... name on official documents can also be written in block letters for last name or differentiated by comma as you stated. as for those degree mill, it really depends on which uni issue them. Doesn't take much effort from a reasonable sized company to check on its accreditation ↡ Advertisement
