Vibrating steering wheel

Hi guys,

 

I changed my wheels to 15" after which I experience vibrations from the steering wheel irregularly...on and off kinda thing. I bought the wheels at Yap Bros, but they did not seem very knowledgable, if all of the problem afflicting my steering.

 

I went back to my regular tire mech at Stamford and he told me the original lug(nut) does not bit the wheel to the axle properly. New lugs will cost me $120 bucks. Actually wanted to do high speed balancing but he told me not to waste my money as the problem is with the lugs.

 

Then I went back to Yap Brothers for a second opinion and they fix up new lugs at $35 bucks. But the problem still persists... I could tell that those people at Yap did not know why I had this problem.... they kept insisting that it shouldnt happen, even after I describe what my tire mech told me.(Maybe they dun understand??)

 

I was told the lugs have to order one, so I have to wait.... anyone experienced anything similar?

Could be balancing problem, it happened to my car previously. The tyre shop removed all the balancing weights, and re-balanced the wheel, and everything is fine.

bro, i think you never do your high speed balancing lah....it doesn't matter with your lug lah....i had this problem before...change to 15 without doing that process...then when on the road at 120, whole steering vibrate like no body business....

 

go to Stamford and ask them to do it at 20 buck!!! [thumbsup]

the problem wif some pple is when u mentioned balancing, wat comes to their minds is offwheel balancing. once they saw their mechs do that, they're happy already and assume that everything will work out fine. but give them a straight stretch, hit 100km/h and the steering wheel will be wobbly, at higher speed sometimes the whole car will rattle. actually should insist that for new rims and tyres, mechs should perform offwheel AND high speed balancing, to ensure that the products that they sell are at optimum working condition. just my opinion though... [:p]

i had this problem too on my ride, the vibration will come on at about 110/120km.

 

Did a high speed balancing and it solved the problem. Maybe you can give it a try... [;)]

imho, sometimes it cud be due to the lock nut because the angle of the nut against your bore is offset. this needs to be proven by checking on the model of your rims and whether the nuts are from the same manufacturer.

 

other possible cuase includes, low quality rims that are casted with inherent defect such as uneven weight distribution. the uneven weight cud be too high to be balanced by the weights that one cud add on during the balancing procedure. so if your rims are those taiwan, indo types, be careful.

 

another possible cause is the tyre itself. again low quality with uneven weight.

 

of coures it could well be you just need a balancing, but from what you said, it seems the prob may be more complex.

 

personal experience, gave up on the rims and tyres because could not isolate problem. got the cheap ones from taiwan.

Just to clear all doubts experienced by our MCFers on tyres balancing and rims. I changed my 14" rims/tyres to 16" rims/tyres ( bought used ) and without alignment and balancing of tyres. I have not experienced any steering vibrations or tyres wearing off at the sides. What I am trying to say is that if the rims are suitable to your vehicle and tyres have been balanced, then changing it to another car, it will still perform.

what the different between alignment and balancing of tyres???

 

balancing cost 10 dollar and alignment cost 100+????

One way to say it: "You are very lucky !".thumbsup.gif But do take note that uneven wear only shown after some time. By then when is visable, it too late, tire need to replace liow. shakehead.gif
