Just saw on Channel 8 Shopping Guide the new Aspec db 505 , or was it 550 ?

Still has the same 4 circumferential grooves but the thread pattern is now "coarser".

The fine slanted grooves are now gone and the resulting thread pattern looks closer to that of the Bridgestone S-03 .

This should be interesting .

Maybe this tyre will have all round improvements over the previous model while still maintaining its lo noise feature .

I wonder how much they are upping the price .

Some write-up

The Yokohama AVS dB S2 was developed to provide ultra high performance for the drivers of sports cars and sporty coupes by providing year round traction, even in light snow. The Yokohama AVS dB S2's most important added feature is a revised tread pattern designed to minimize irregular wear and the resulting increase in noise.

The AVS name identifies this tire as a member of their Advanced Vehicle System family and the dB is the abbreviation for decibel (the unit of measurement used to quantify sound pressure). Therefore, the AVS dB name is fitting because when new, this is Yokohama's quietest Ultra High Performance tire.

The directional tread design combines several key design elements that enhance the AVS dB S2's capabilities. A continuous center block provides uninterrupted rubber-to-road contact while "tusk" shaped grooves minimize noise and maximize water drainage. Additionally, all of the tread block sizes and shapes are designed specifically to help neutralize one another's noise patterns when new.

However, one of the drawbacks of a directional tread design is that it limits the options in the ways that the tires may be rotated. Since directional tires must always roll in one direction to maximize their hydroplaning resistance and wet traction capabilities, without remounting them on their wheels they can only be rotated from front-to-rear on one side of the car. Without rigid adherence to maintaining correct inflation pressures, tire rotation and vehicle alignment, this limitation can lead directional tires, including the AVS dB S2, to experience irregular "heel and toe" wear which causes the tread blocks to wear unevenly. Heel and toe wear will increase the noise level as the miles add up. This condition is typically experienced on vehicles equipped with independent rear suspensions whose alignment setting specifications call for negative camber, such as BMW, Lexus and Mercedes, etc. In the case of the AVS dB S2, tie-bars (small rubber links) have been engineered into the lateral tread grooves to connect the outer shoulder blocks circumferentially. These tie-bars further stabilize the outer tread blocks, and in combination with the continuous circumferential rib in the center of the tread design, help reduce the possibility of heel/toe and alternate block wear.

Internally, the AVS dB S2 uses a casing design with Active Flex Control (AFC) technology which helps absorb bumps without abandoning the lateral stiffness required for responsive handling and cornering control. Twin steel belts are reinforced by spirally wound nylon strips to provide long term integrity under high speed conditions while reducing weight and providing more uniform ride quality.

Yokohama reinvented their All-Season tread compound technology to stretch the AVS dB S2's range of operating temperatures in order to allow them to hold the road in summer's heat while providing light snow traction in winter's cold.

AVS dB S2 tires features black letter styling and are available in 65-, 60-, 55-, 50-, and 45-series V-, and W-speed rated sizes for 15" to 17" wheel diameters. Quiet...Comfortable

At least change to Premium or better tyres.. you NEVER NEVER know when you need it.. Could be road conditions create havok such as aqua-plying (is the spelling correct ??. YOu won't hit other car but you will LOSE grip traction, which you cannot even control the handling of your car.

My advice is that it is all about insurance... my life and passengers in the car worth more then $600 dollars on better tyres then to take the risk.
