Seems like a lot of ppl are choosing 205 bcos of the SG/MY free maps and I guess well up to date. Has anyone tried loading australian cities navigation maps. I presume it should be possible but just wondering if anyone tried and whether the Aust. maps are free or payable? Any comments?

google "shonky maps" and "GPS australia"

those are free. but i believe the details for the city are not so good. u get a broad overview for the city area.

i downloaded shonkymaps to my garmin, but i'm doing a road trip in the countryside and dun plan to spend too much time in melbourne (tt's where i'm headed).

Hi there..

I'm thiking of ordering from Amazon also.

But it seems they have shipping restrictions as it contains Lithium battery.

Do U encounter any problems from the US customs?

I tot of shipping thru Borderlinx as it's cheaper.

Thanks.

No issue at all... Because the battery has been assembled into the unit at the factory... If ship by vPOST, use address at Portland...

Borderlinx needs CitiBank credit card... [sweatdrop]

Borderlinx keep insisting they can't ship it.

So no choice I use Vpost...

yup, Vpost did mentioned can only ship thru Portland and the battery must be with the unit.

hopefully can arrive by next week hehe

thx anyway!

Hi a few questions...

am interested in getting the Garmin 205W as will be collecting my car either this week or the next

Q1) I read that it is cheaper to purchase from Amazon.com - how much will that be in sing dollar + shipping?

Q2) Do i need to purchase anything else as how do you guys placed the GPS system on your dashboards? a holder or something?

Q3) If i get it from Amazon.com, is the device already installed with the maps and ready to go? or do i need to do anything?

Q4) Garmin needs to be connected to any parts of the car?

Q5) Share some pictures of the setup?

Sorry for some stupid questions as i really do not have any knowledge of the above...

Try to answer some of ur questions.

Q1. U need to go to amazon.com and see for urself the prices. cos at times the prices will fluctuate, but not much I guess. I got my nuvi 260 for around SGD$200. Shipping thru Vpost was around $35 I think.

But take note I had ordered the extra holder to be placed on the dashboard. So total weight was slightly more than 2 pounds. At times amazon have shipping free promotions, but it's only to US address. At least U save some dollars for it to be shipped to Vpost or Borderlinx.

Q2. Normally the Nuvi sets comes with a holder for U to stick on ur windscreen or dashboard.

Q3. Nope. Maps are normally US maps. I can get them from http://www.malfreemaps.com/

It's thanks to the the hard work of a large number of mappers that we can use the maps for free.

But pls try to contribute if U can.

Instructions and guides are there.

Q4. Since it uses rechargeable battery, it does not to be connected. But it comes with the car charger which is useful and I normally use it when driving, especially for long drives.

Q5. Er what pictures do U nid? U can go to amazon, they do have pics of the sets.

From my understanding, POI is dependent on the map. So example, locally here, u got a malsing or malfree map, the POI in the map should be able to be seen when routing. So far, malfree map have nicer icons. [thumbsup]

Anyone can correct me?

If you do not want to go through the hassle of ordering from the internet, wait for the IT Show in Suntec next mth 12th -15th. Should have some GPS bargain there. I am hoping to buy one too during the show.
