My german boss driving a VW passat TDI estate is getting 18-19km/l in Germany. So I believe in our local road condition, 14-15km/l is possible for a passat TDI.

The 159JTD should be around the same.

in germany, i believe they dont switch on the aircon. and i believe his is a manual.

try not to switch on the aircon with a manual car... think you can achieve 18-19km/l as well?

Neutral Newbie

If you seriously consider a diesel look at the VAG (Audi, VW) cars, diesel coming in soon. They are the market leaders in diesel technology. Heard of the monster R8 TDi?

read somewhere that diesel vehicles are not subjected to the 3/4 tank rule. So if offset the shorter service interval.

but i think there's little data on vehicles using diesel in JB vs SGP to compare.

At the moment, Singapore's LSD (low sulphur diesel) supports only up to Euro II (as i only found out... 500ppm) and is not exactly that good for Euro IV diesel engines.

Heard that Shell will be the first to launch the Euro IV ULSD (ultra low sulphur diesel) which is 50ppm, here in September.

So, Singapore is not exactly ready for diesel engine cars yet.

I read about diesel cars problem in South Africa where the diesel quality is not that good, which cause problems to the engines. So much so that journalist there prefer petrol engine cars despite having turbo diesels available without special tax.

Looks like diesel prices going up .. haha

Hopefully once it is up there at the "right" price, diesel tax for private passenger cars will be gone. I sincerely hope.

diesel price will definitely go up because higher quality diesel will be introduced.

but, will special tax be abolished? ... well i dont think so.

the reason given by LTA for the need for special tax is because petrol is taxed... whereas diesel, mainly used for commercial reasons, are not taxed. So, the introduction of ULSD while higher cost, but is still not taxed... so special tax for diesel vehicles prevail.

These taxes are there, according to LTA, as a deterrent for car usage to ease traffic on the road (seemed like duplicate of ERP to me, if this is the main reason for the special tax and petrol duty).

yes, diesel vehicle are not subjected to 3/4 tank rule.

anyway malaysia diesel price raised from 1.581 to 2.581 rm

malysia diesel with more sulphur = more power..

anyway what matters most is the cetane level , it's similar to octane for petrol

the more cetean in the diesel the more ommph from the vehicle [thumbsup]

anyway malaysia fuel quality is on the raise already..

ERP is the measure to control usage and if taxing petrol is another way to control usage, then I would like them to tax diesel the same way they do petrol and drop the special diesel tax currently in place. This would give us motorists another options, in fact, it opens up many more engine choices for us. BMW 3.0D for example, sweet engine. Even the 320D is a good car to own.

Good review of this car in yesterday's paper. Same thing was mentioned, the tax structure will limit its popularity plus perhaps the "taxi like" idling sound.
