How Reliable is VW?

The odd CVT is in the old (out-going) Polo, which does not sell well anyway.

Imagine an anemic 1.4L low-torque engine mated to a CVT - rubber-bandy man!

The Polo is not CVT, it has a real 6-speed automatic with torque converter. Agree with you on the weak engine though.

Hi,

New to the forum. Was contemplating between a 2nd hand Volvo S60 and Audi A4. Just got hold of a 2-yr A4 2.0 MU from Premium. Looking for input from other Audi drivers. So far performance is within expectation.

The old A4 really looks very dated and dumpy, especially from the rear. Get the T5 version of the S60, and you will have a stonking car [thumbsup]

S60 was in town since 2001. So it is not a newer design than A4.

True. But the S60 should be more comfortable, better performance, better seats, and exterior looks more substantial than the weedy A4 too.

After seeing the Discovery Torque channel yesterday on Subaru legacy vs Volvo test drive at their same cat, I will never think of getting a Volvo anymore. Not only loose out the speed by 2.1 sec, it's drive feel, confort also beaten down by legacy badly.

Too bad they never crash both these cars. Then the winner will be obvious [scholar]

Oh no ... can anyone offer any views whether it applies to Volvo turbo cars too? [sweatdrop]

volvo's been doing turbo cars for ages. no worries. i'm on my second wowo. so far i've not read of issues with the turbo in the volvo forums. in fact many of us who drive along NSH can attest to the durability of the turbo.

VW dun called it Tiptronic, they still call it auto. It's just a normal autobox with a torque converter that has a manual overide.

Thanks for the insight on DSG. Agree on its questionable long-term reliability. That's why I am staying away from it for just now.

As for Tiptronic:

Tiptronic is a registered trademark, owned by German sports car maker Porsche, who license it for use by other manufacturers, such as Land Rover and the Volkswagen Group (Audi, SEAT,

The Audi Multitronic had problems in its earlier incarnation up till 2006. But the recent ones on the A4 and A6 have been problem free. Perhaps they have worked out the problems for models after 2007 or maybe they are just not old enough yet to experience wear and tear. I do think that the MU is a hit or miss affair: lucky or unlucky. If it had been a perennial problem from 2003 onwards, and they are aware of it, Audi should have had the decency to give owners worldwide free replacement and servicing of gearbox.

On the other hand, I have not heard of any problems with the Mitsubishi and Nissan CVT. So it could be an Audi engineering thing. Shame, cos Audi make one of the most bulletproof turbo 4 engines in the world.

Neutral Newbie

You should never have touched an Audi MU (CVT), especially a used one.

Too many Audi owners have experienced problems with the CVT after 2-3 years of driving, most having to replace it (to the tune of $27K, as quoted by PA). Many of them just did minor repairs to get it working just for a while, before dumping it in the used car market - like a hot potato.

Anyway, due to so much bad press on the Multitronic CVT and owner complaints, PA now (mainly) brings in the S-tronic (DSG) tranny and Tiptronic (Auto) for the current models, with the odd Manual (e.g. S3) on an indent basis. PA not stupid right? It has to continue selling Audis.

Even when brand new (e.g. in the test drive car), the Multitronic CVT, due to its use of a steel-braided belt, is awfully loud at high RPMs. I can't even conduct a decent conversation with the SE in the car. We had to literally scream at each other.

Good luck with your purchase! [lipsrsealed][sweatdrop]

Thanks for the input. Already bot the car. Got 1 more year of warranty. Juz cross fingers and hope nothing major happen.
