but i guess Turkish do not hate the Germans as much as the Morrocans/Tunisians hate the French.

The Ottoman Turks and the Germans were allies in WWI. [;)]

(i have always own contis...my first was a Corsa GSI)

The french are lovers and not engineers...the Germans are engineers and not lovers....

German engineering is good and reliable trust me... [thumbsup]

but only if you buy from the AD else PI's stock can be quite ahem...

I think nothing will not fail or nobody can gaurantee zero lemon. I don't think we should generalise brands or models/make. some people told me Honda sux too...

Thats right, no matter what make/model, there are bound to be problems.

Having said that, I would rather a car with some problems and is something I look forward to driving every morning, rather than a bland appliance thats mind numbingly reliable..laugh.gif

i'm on my second VW based vehicle and none of them rattle...one was nearly 5 years and 170,000km on the clock

i find them pretty reliable, easy to maintain and parts are generally cheaper that jap parts.

of cource, you don't have to go to the AD for servicing.....cos they charge u an arm, a leg and other body parts ...

i am not a VW fan, but i have a friend have been driving a

used 5 years old Passat without a hint of problem. The body

is as tough as nail. you probably won't find such quality

from any Jap sedan. Even though Jap cars may have better

reliability in the electrical, engine department; the common

problem may be the rattling sound from its failing body.

Overall, VW as a brand, does not have a good reputation on reliability.

From the "Australian New Car Buyer" 2008 magazine Issue 31, under 'Things You Might Not Like' for each of the VW models summarized:

VW GOLF GT SPORT

- Reliability continues to be an issue with the Golf

VW GOLF

- The usual VW reliability warning

- A few squeaks and rattles in the cabin

VW PASSAT

- VW quality and reliability are inconsistent

VW GOLF GTI

- Reliability continues to be an issue with the Golf

- A few squeaks and rattles in the test car

VW JETTA

- Lots of squeaks and rattles in the test car

VW EOS

- VW's reliability record isn't great

Now, I have not seen such recurring, repetitive and consistent remarks on a brand's UNreliability and squeaks/rattles across nearly the ENTIRE RANGE of cars it makes. Not in this same magazine, or for that matter, any other magazine.

The 'scene' is no different in UK and USA mags too, where reliability is a let down for the VW range too, especially the more-recent (1990-onwards) cars that they make.

* The Golf III / Jetta III / Scirroco range in the late 80's were built like tanks.

Then from the Golf IV / Vento / Corrado range in the early 90's, it was downhill all the way for VW, in terms of overall quality.

Someone had mentioned JD Powers ranking in this thread too. Now ALL of the reviewers, ALL over the world, cannot be ALL wrong, can they?

There has to be some truth to all that.

And I am one living proof, having owned a VW before and don't think will ever consider buying another one. The usual stuff - squeaks and rattles like forever, power windows that keep failing one after another.

Probably depends on which make VW is compared to. And the expectations. VW is not a premium brand, even though they try to portray that in SG.

Agree that VGS is trying really very hard to protray VW as a premium brand, only here in SG, when it actually is not anywhere else in the world - e.g. Europe and the USA.

Their sales margin (selling price less OMV-multiplier and COE) is nearly equivalent to what PA is realizing for Audis! [sweatdrop] The difference is, at least, Audi is considered a premium brand.
