How Reliable is VW?

Just went for a test drive of the Touran.

Really like the power and the smooth transmission and the high safety spec.

However, am really worry abt the reliability of a conti...

Currently driving the Meagne, and this car really make me shakehead.gifshakehead.gifshakehead.gif...

Less than 1.5yrs, gearbox went kaput while I'm on NSH to Maleka...

Plus numerous other issues (flooded compartment, faulty radio, door handle "skin" peel off...)

When driving 3 different Japs for 7 years, has never need to make any warranty claim.

Just do the normal servcing and that's it.

So how does a VW fare in the reliability department?

Thank you

my friend you are hurting my feelings comparing the French to the German...

(i have always own contis...my first was a Corsa GSI)

The french are lovers and not engineers...the Germans are engineers and not lovers....

German engineering is good and reliable trust me... [thumbsup]

but only if you buy from the AD else PI's stock can be quite ahem...

bro,

not all conti cars are the same.

i've never had a VW badged car but for the past 7 years, i have bought cars from the VW cousins, SEAT and SKODA

they have been reliable, that is why i got another, parts are cheaper than jap and you can service outside.

SKODA tops the reliability surveys very frequently, fyi

"very very reliable, no need water/coolant can go.

That only applies to old skool VW Beetle and such ... [;)]

I am driving a German variant in the form of the Czech made, Skoda Superb. It is basically a rebadged VW Passat B5.5 LWB version. Engine is basically German as the parts are a mixture of Audi and VW parts since Skoda do not produce their own parts, they take from the parts basket from both Audi and VW.

Quality and built is top notch, a Japaeness Altis ram into the corner of my ride, her ride's lamps, bumpers were totally gone and mine had a paint scratch....this only reconfirms one of the bros post about German rides built like tanks.

With a 1.8T engine basically a bullet proof engine with regularly timely servicing.

If my ride from German decent is of such quality built, I believe the Touran should even be more, the 1.4TSI Super-Turbo charged powerplant is aplenty with torque low end and a nice mid-high range.

Stable and quality ride, if it was released 3 years ago at this price, I would have gone for it.

my experience with VW,

Engine - very reliable.

Gearbox - more durable than japs. Reliability wise, percentage is high... but you do get the odd friday car at times.

Electronics - better than french or italian, but not as reliable as Japs... but then again, how much electronics does the japs have?

Chassis - Safe but dull

Safety - Look at Euro NCAP result. ... German are always safer than japs (but not anymore lately, Nissan Qashqai has the highest Euro NCAP crash test score now besides the French C6)

Price - a bit exhorbitant... not exactly value for money

After sales service - err.... better not to comment if nothing good is coming out.

Make your own judgement. It's your money you're putting in.

I've heard countless horror stories about the French.... basically, avoid french cars at all cost. The cars are built in France by Morrocans/Tunisians who despise the french. So, what do you think?

Well, German cars are built by Turkish in Germany (and sometimes Africans in South Africa as with the 5door GTi, or Mexicans in Mexico as with the Jettas)... that's why there is the odd surprise... but i guess Turkish do not hate the Germans as much as the Morrocans/Tunisians hate the French.

Turbocharged

Your assessment is really [thumbsup] . Very readable, informative with tongue in cheek.

But you break my heart leh. I was thinking of a Peugeot 307 or 407 for my next car. Love the curves and the feline look (cannot afford Jaguar at least for the next 50 years). But the Peugeot is right at the bottom of the satisfaction survey. [sweatdrop]

Maybe I'll have to stick with my Japanese Xiao Hong for the next few years already. [:|][:p]

Owned an Opel before and the experience was thumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gif

Parts were hard to find, heart aches when wrong parts were given. Arguments with stockist abound.

Maybe it was GM...

Heard about the shared engine parts between Audi, VW and Skoda. that would solve the parts issue.

another thing to consider is fuel economy.

Despite greater efforts in this area, tanks do need a lot more fuel.

My opel was clocking 12Km/l, at best. My Jap tin can clocks 15km/l easily! I hit 16.5 - 17Km/l in average. I could hit 18km/L if I go for economy aggressively.

In cash terms, could be another $100 - $200 more at least.

btw, despite tin can status, Jap cars' NCAP Rankings have improved over the years

Outlander

CRV

Bottomline it is how you drive.

Drive the tank if you go to the war zone

Drive the tin can if you avoid harm's way.

I will do the latter.

Understand how you feel. I was a SA there for a short while. Really sometimes dunno how to explain to the customers when their rides have issues and parts got to wait. [:p]

You are kind with your words.

The cars you are looking at (Jag, 307, 407..) are basically sexy on the outside...

But Jag (or its ex parents Ford) has no money for R&D. So what you're getting is old tech. And for the price you pay, ... you can get something newer and better.

Having said that, i love the design of the new XF ... especially the pulsing starter button and rotating gear shift knob. Engine is old though... and now at TATA, their future performance will probably mirror Force India's fortune in F1.

Peugeot,... well, if its only the curves that appeal to you, ... better to look at Alfa Romeo or Fiat (if you cant afford a Lambo, Ferrari or Maserati). I think Italians are better designers than French.

Most Japs will soon have tomyam after taste (with Nissan joinning Toyota and Honda soon). Pure sushi japs dont come by so often now unless you go PI.
