Mohdya Neutral Newbie July 16, 2008 Share July 16, 2008 A Lemon Car is defined as one with numerous defects/ technical problems since the first day of collecting it or one where you have to send in numerous times for repairs, either for the same problem or all different in a short span of time. So what do you do when you get a 'lemon'? Very limited unless you have lots and lots of $$$$. In Singapore, there are no laws to protect new car buyers from a lemon (like in the USA). If you want a replacement, you have to get your own lawyer to sue ($$$$$) or go to CASE for mediation (doesn't always work). The dealers/ manufacturer are at their liberty to give you whatever standard of quality car they have, and if you are unfortunate enough, you get a problematic car. In the US, if you get a lemon and it's proven that you have a lemon, you get a replacement car under the State law. It doesn't make any sense not to have this law here, as cars in Singapore are the most expensive in the world!!! So why is the government not helping? Well, you figure it out..."bad for business"? etc.....One of the answers. Isn't it time, we car buyers start to push for this law implementation? I've written to NMP Sin Boon Ann (no reply yet) and bring this up to CASE as well (they are trying too), but maybe we all should work together to achieve this! What are you thoughts/ comments? ↡ Advertisement

Osiris 1st Gear July 16, 2008 Share July 16, 2008 No $$ for lawyer? use the media to pressure the dealer - blog, forum, papers, stomp whatever. but make sure everything you say have b/w to prove it.

Mohdya Neutral Newbie July 16, 2008 Author Share July 16, 2008 Hayah....buying Toyota also got a lot of lemons these days...because made in Thailand! You definitely cannot escape.....even buying a BMW..like the news reported sometime ago. The owner only won at the High Court after appeal...just imaging how much money she spent!! Anyway, so many cases already..but all unreported in the papers due to some of the reasons I've mentioned. CASE told me so many cases already..here in Singapore. Leepee 1st Gear July 16, 2008 Share July 16, 2008 I would say buy the insurance that can promise you one-for-one new car replacement should it be stolen or totally wreck withint the 1st year! If within the 6months one believe the car is a Lemon, then just let it be stolen or totally burned in MSCP. Claim for a brand new one from insurance! We buy insurance is to reduce the worries....let the insurance handle it for us.

Watwheels Supersonic July 16, 2008 Share July 16, 2008 U are expecting a lemon law? I think there's nothing much a car owner can do except to keep going back to the AD's workshop to sort it out. There are so many things out there which are mass manufactured. For those in the manufacturing sector should understand. Even with tok kong QC(Quality Control) it is impossible to have 0% defect(perfection), that's where warranty comes in. Cars are also mass produced. They are limits on QC. Car manufacturers have to put in more effort on dealerships and after sales services. In SG I think at most they can do is pressure the dealers to maybe give more warranty/service for lemon cars. Schneider79 Clutched July 16, 2008 Share July 16, 2008 (edited) You will never get a Lemon law in singapore to protect the consumers as there are too much government intervention in registering the car locally. USA do not have the marketing tools like ARF, paper registration, OMV, COE, road tax(payment through paper value) and so on... So if you get a lemon in singapore, you can't go back to the dealer and get them to replace a new car for you as the variable components cannot be taken back in cash form. There is no way to reverse the registration entry in the authorities system. The only person who will stick with you is the 1st hand technician who touch your car and service advisor who attended to you until your problems go away. If you're unlucky(another variable component), your SA or technician quits... then you got new set of problem. So when you get a lemon car, make sure you're nice to the SA and the technician. Hope they go through with ya! Good luck! Edited July 16, 2008 by Schneider79
