Kelpie 2nd Gear July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 Contemplating in getting a dish washer but have a few questions: a) Is it really more economical to use dish washer to wash everything once a day? b) How about energy consumption? c) Can really wash dishes cleaner than human effort? d) Which brand is reliable? Thank you very much. Regards, ↡ Advertisement
Kb27 Supersonic July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 I used it when I was in the US. Our Asian cooking is generally quite greasy. Dish washer may not completely cleaned it. Sometimes, flakes of food still remains stuck on the plate. So I have to do a bit of manual pre-cleaning before putting into the dishwasher, which kinds of defeat its purpose. But the heater (after wash cycle) is a wonderful thing, except you use electricity.

I'm also looking into gadget like robotic sweeper. 2. Which brand did you use? I guess certian pre-cleaning is expected, you probably need to remove food that stick to the plate or wok. Unless you're telling me that a capable dish washer should be able to wash off anything that stick to the utensils? I've not used one before so trying to find out more. Thank you. Beaver 2nd Gear July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 Yes i agreed. Used it when I was in US too. To be honest...I prefer hand wash. Do take note of the piping thou cos our house is not design to have a dish washer.

Piping can always construct so it is not an issue. I'm more concern about cleaniness and time savings. Thank you. Regards,
Kb27 Supersonic July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 I stayed in apartments and many times in inns where they have complete kitchen. Most of the time, they used GE as it's very common there. With dishwasher, you normally don't expect to do any pre-cleaning, other than throwing utensils into it. It can't cope well with greasy frying pans, which we used to stir-fry...that's why I had to do a bit of additional cleaning. Next you might also want to get washing machine and dryer. Washing machine is common here, but not so the dryer. Dryer is very nice too, you don't get the stinking smell that some wear around, bcoz their clothes were not properly dried. Again, the cost is electricity.

You're right that I'm going to missed my yard and terrace to sun my clothes when I moved into HDB. I probably have to find a safer and efficient way to hang my clothes outside of my flat. I see HDB dwellers drying cloths along the corridors but doubt I will want to do that, this is just not right. Dryer is going to cost me handsome electricity bill. Do you use cool drying or heated drying? Regards,
Beaver 2nd Gear July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 I have been using a dryer for almost 10 years and simply love it. Electricity bill is abt $200+ with aircon on every night. We washed abt 4 round of clothes and dried 4 rounds of clothes every week. Not too sure if thats y our electricity bill is so high. You have a big family and eat alot ? Really dun think it is necessary to get a dish washer. Washing, drying and ironing clothes manually takes more time, i personally feel that.
Kb27 Supersonic July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 (edited) Unfortunately, I can't afford a dryer yet. Right now, just use the sun...gotta space out clothing more when hanging up to dry. Dry heat will make your clothing smells crisp, just like ironing. Actually, you should keep your clothes dry for hygene purpose. Bacteria thrives on wet area. Kklee 6th Gear July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 Pre-soak the dishes before washing will save time and detergent.
Beavc Clutched July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 I have a roomba (the sweeper)...i find it to be good...but it boils down to the lay out of your home...if your house is clustered and pack then it will not work that well, cos corners (tight) can create problems... plus if your apt is large you may have to segment it to clean area by area. I also tried the mop, that one also good...but i can live without it... PS i have dogs so the hair is a problem, but u can get the heavy duty version from the main distributor at Outram... Marquee Clutched July 13, 2008 Share July 13, 2008 Yes, I love my dryer too. Makes life a lot easier. The concern is the eletricity bill. Speaking about energy conservation these days, so recently we started to use the sun. Use dish washer in US quite sometime back. Dun think it is sutiable for us as our utensil comes in odd size and shape, which require to wash seperately.

Kelpie 2nd Gear July 13, 2008 Author Share July 13, 2008 I still could remember when it was 1st launched under a different brand at Harvey Norman, it was a few thousands dollar. It is clever, when it is about to runs out of battery life, it will go back automatically to its charger and get charged. Regards,
