Hoppe Clutched July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 WinXP is still the better OS.
Bearbear1494 Clutched July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 You would need to make sure that you have the XP drivers for the laptop. Vista drivers are not compatible. You can usually find the drivers either from the laptop manufacturer's website, or google for them. Typically, the key drivers you need to find are; Motherboard chipset, Graphics card, Sound, & Wifi drivers. In some cases, for laptops using a Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive, you'd might need the SATA driver in order for the XP installer to detect the hard drive. Droozy Neutral Newbie July 6, 2008 Author Share July 6, 2008 wa.. is it very troublesome ? So that means I have to know the specs of the hardware very detail which I should be able to find in the brohure ?? Or i look into the control panel first , write all the stuff down and then google one by one to buy the driver ? Cant find like in the acer website ?... BoneStock 5th Gear July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 yes, it's not that straightforward. The other bro is right, you have to make sure that all the XP drivers are available for your laptop before making the plunge. Also, after gathering all the XP drivers that you think are the right ones, it is better to have a contingency plan in place, just in case. For eg, if any of the XP drivers don't work, then how? Worst is, the XP cannot even boot to OS level if any of the critical drivers are not loaded. So there are 2 things you could do. If there is a recovery partition in your existing hard drive, usually you can press one of the function buttons during startup to restore Vista back to your system. If there is no recovery partition, you may want to ask for one from the laptop manufacturer. if not, then use a backup tool like ghost to back up your vista before doing this. Ultramega 1st Gear July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 Borrow thread... Anyone knows how to load dual OS? ie, install XP and Vista on the same computer, user choose which one to run at startup. Anyone?
BoneStock 5th Gear July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 there should be quite a bit of documentation available in the web if you google some text like "dual boot xp vista". Here's one that I feel is quite good because a lots of pictures are added to show the procedure step by step. http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.h tm?page=1://http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_...ide.h tm?page=1://http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_...ide.h tm?page=1://http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_...ide.h tm?page=1 However, the procedure seems to suggest a fresh install for XP and Vista on a new hard drive. What if, the hard drive is already pre-loaded with Vista occupying the entire hard disk space? Then there is a need to backup vista 1st, repartition the hard drive to your desired sizes for Vista and XP. This step is can be done by using a partition tool like ghost or simply boot up using a Vista or XP setup disk....this step is destructive and your existing info on the hard drive will be wiped out. Finally, restore Vista back into one of the partitions and followed by the XP setup using the instructions in the URL above. Hope this helps.
BoneStock 5th Gear July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 sorry i was looking at the wrong url just now, the one i sent should address the concern of vista occupying whole disk.

Kklee 6th Gear July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 Before changing, do check if you have the recovery disk or need to create the recovery disk from the present OS.
Guyver 1st Gear July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 as above.. if I have the XP OEM cd .. Thanks. WIll appreciate if there are steps for me to follow.. thanks! First boot with Windows XP CD and try setting up XP on it. If it shows that no harddisk can be found .... probably means that your harddisk is SATA type and the BIOS does not have the SATA driver. Albeniz Turbocharged July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 First boot with Windows XP CD and try setting up XP on it.If it shows that no harddisk can be found .... probably means that your harddisk is SATA type and the BIOS does not have the SATA driver. One important DLL file was corrupted and I could not enter into my Windows Vista. Stuck at the bootup screen. Tried to reformat my laptop with a Windows XP CD but it cannot see the harddisk. Anyone here has any info on how to go about this issue? Many thanks.
Jeffang Neutral Newbie July 6, 2008 Share July 6, 2008 the most easy way is call the helpdesk of the notebook/computer maker... i got 1 hp laptop that come with vista also, and i call them up asking them is there anyway for me to use xp... and they will give u a tixket number, then i got down to hp, pay $12 for those cd which make for my laptop.. and is very easy to setup from there, as all driver will be in it!
