June 30, 2008 Managers, professionals command higher salaries in '07

JOBS requiring professional and specialised training continued to command higher salaries in 2007, reflecting the premium on skills and responsibilities.

Wages also rose with age, especially for jobs at the higher end. But this link was less so for the lower skilled and blue-collared workers whose wages rose slightly with age and peaked early in their 30s.

These are some of the key findings of the 'Report on Wages in Singapore, 2007' published by the Ministry of Manpower's Research and Statistics Department.

The 210-page report, out on Monday, provides information on salaries of over 300 occupations as well as wage changes and bonuses paid in various industries. It also includes information on the extent to which employers have restructured their wage systems.

The report shows that managers received the highest median gross monthly wages at $6,101 in June 2007, followed by professionals at $4,030.

The third highest paid were associate professionals and technicians at $2,789, while clerical and sales and service workers were paid close to $2,000.

Among blue-collar occupations, production workers were paid more - at $2,110 - than plant and machine operators ($1,780). The lowest paid were the cleaners, labourers and related workers who took home a median gross pay of $968.

The report also revealed that:

[*]Amid the strong economic performance and tight labour market, total wages rose by a seven-year high of 5.9 per cent during the year, up from 4.5 per cent in 2006.

This was a result of a basic wage gain of 4.3 per cent and an increase in bonus payout (also known as annual variable component) from 2.18 months in 2006 to 2.36 months in 2007.

[*]Labour productivity contracted by 0.9 per cent, after the previous two years of slowing growth.

After adjusting for higher inflation, real total wages rose by 3.8 per cent and real basic wages by 2.2 per cent. Consequently, real wages outpaced productivity growth in 2007 for the third consecutive year.

Over a longer period of five years or more, the growth in productivity had kept pace with gains in wages, said the report.

[*]As at December, 84 per cent of of the workforce in the private sector was under some form of flexible wage system, up slightly from a year ago but significantly higher than 76 per cent in June 2004.

During the year, more private establishments (18 per cent) that employed low wage workers adopted the National Wages Council's recommendation to give more to these workers, compared with 16 per cent a year ago.

The report can be downloaded from the Ministry of Manpower's website.

His employer defended him saying that only he volunteers for extra work - apparently nobody else wants the overtime.

And that he completes the assignments given - presumably meaning they have no complaints about cleanliness of the area under his charge.

What to do if the ah tiong happen to be more hard-working than those lazy ang mohs and latinos? It's a cultural thing. [laugh]

The problem is more about whether all that overtime is really necessary in the first place??

Anyway their cleaner basic pay not counting overtime also not bad liao ... $57k USD

Just watched this in Fox News at my hotel. I thought they were really trying to dig out something. It was a Chinese guy and they monitored him through the security camera and the only thing they found was he took like an hour lunch break sometimes...

I thought that guy was pretty hardworking :(

This Chao keng ah tiong is eating snake while working, that's why he can stretch his working hrs to 20 hrs a day, by hiding n sleeping in the closet n not working during working hrs. So the job that's got to be done is done during OT hrs, which pays double. He no fren , nothing to do so sleep in day n work at night ot lo..His ang mo boss shld be sacked too, for signing so much abnormal ot. This kinda Chao keng snake also found in SG, both yellow n black kind..Drag feet during day n purposely work ot to earn more..

"discovered that Mr Liang frequently visited a storage closet in the station.

He would spend up to 90 minutes in the closet several times a day.

When asked, Mr Liang said he was taking his lunch break, although Bart said its employees eat their lunch in a break room and are only given 30 minutes for meals."

I think if CCTV news report this, many mainland chinese will scramble to go US be janitor liao.

Why they got so much budget for OT? Just employ 2 or 3 shifts, still significantly cheaper than one OT pay...

Humanly impossible la. How to work 20 hrs a day for 18 consecutive days? Robot also need to go for servicing already.

Check the supervisor's bank account.

Maybe he has been taking 30% cut from each of his staff.

tell.you one true story.

I went for a 3 days course sonewhere near holland rd.Ah tiong general cleaners.

There were 5 toilet cubicle for that floor but for the 3 days i was there only 1 cubicle was opened for use and sometime the line can have 3 people waiting to use. On the last day i came back from mosque at 2 something....and still there was only one cubicle opened but as i was entering the cubicle the next one opened and one general worker (uniformed) came out looking like someone who had just woken up. nb.....i thought there only opened up one cubicle so that they would only be cleaning only one.....turn out they were using the toilet as a sleeping cubicle....

Sounds similar to those shipyard workers I encountered!!! Working hours slowly do.................then can do OT later. Every single day ask for OT.
