'We will conduct a thorough investigation into the case. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the officers responsible for the lapses.'

"The officers who failed to spot the discrepancy between the name in the man's passport and on his boarding pass, will be taken to task."

A bit weird. The SG police could not produce proof?

A top New Zealand-based heart surgeon has been arrested and released at Singapore's airport in a case of mistaken identity.

Waikato Hospital's clinical director of cardiothoracic surgery Adam El-Gamel was arrested at the airport yesterday.

It capped off a series of unfortunate events and he and his wife were now waiting for his passport to be returned so they could return home to Hamilton.

Mr El-Gamel, who is considered a pioneering surgeon and one of the world's best, was on his way to India to teach a new surgical technique.

But the couple were stopped from entering because of rule changes there for British passport holders.

When he and his wife, Valerie, returned to their last stop in Singapore their bags went missing, and then he was arrested

Speaking from Singapore, Mrs El-Gamel said officials suspected her husband of having multiple passports and of belonging to a crime ring.

She said the first hint of trouble came when questions were raised about his passport.

He was escorted away and he had to phone her to tell her he had been arrested.

"They released him because there's nothing to charge him for, because of course he doesn't hold multiple passports and he's not part of a criminal gang.

"But I believe Singapore is on high alert for terrorism at the moment and that he wasn't the only one to be managed in this way yesterday, there were other men," she said.

Mrs El-Gamel said she struggled to get help. She was trying to find a lawyer when Mr El-Gamel was released.

She said she could not say whether her husband, who was originally from Egypt, was targeted because of his appearance.

"I really don't know. I just think we're living in difficult times, everybody is on high alert and these people are trying to do a job.

"They have a job to do to protect their country and they have done their job. I think my difficulty is the lack of support, really."

She said she had to constantly contact the British High Commission, and the police station never answered her calls.

She said her husband was exhausted after the ordeal but the pair held no hard feelings against anyone.

They hoped they could return to New Zealand tomorrow.

In cases like these, I think there is always more than meets the eye. Even within this report, I found it a bit strange. This chap was denied entry into India, even though he was supposed to go there to teach a new surgical technique. This means he never even got to enter India in the first place and therefore couldn't even go to whereever he was supposed to go to teach his technique.

And since when were British Passport holders denied entry into India?

I guess it won't be unfair to speculate that the man has criminal records.

for the past few years ... the attacks in usa and europe were carried out by usa or europe passport holders but "foreign born"

that's the challenge ... the terrorist network has upgraded their action

today's papers say he was let off with a warning. In other words police believe he was guilty of the crime but decided not to proceed for whatever reason(s)...

so this case was about a "theft" of an expensive wallet and then released after a stern warning?

is this action justified? what is the sentences for theft aka shoplifting?

a top surgeon steal a cheapo branded wallet? what is he thinking?

Here is the article from Straits Times 10 Jan 2015. Yes, this chap is an alleged shop-lifter. Police arrested him, and subsequently released him with a conditional warning.

I quote

"Responding to queries from The Straits Times, the Singapore Police confirmed that Dr El-Gamel had been arrested for his alleged involvement in a shop theft that occurred in February last year near Orchard Road."

U wanna spend our tax money to send him to the lock up, pay for his food, send him to the court and charge him and finally send him to the jail and feed him again? For a petty crime like this I think we shouldn't be spending our money on him. Serious crimes are different altogether though

Good point.

Anyway, the Police administered a conditional warning. Not sure what a conditional warning means it sounds bad enough, especially for somebody who is a professional with an international reputation to protect.

Come to think of it, this chap is silly. Why kick up a fuss with the media? Now it may backfire on him. If he kept quiet, I don't think anybody would know and media won't pick up this story.
