Toddler falls from car...

And is run over by it

ONE family's plan to spend an evening out shopping was tragically cut short when their 21-month-old son fell out of the moving car and was run over by it.

The accident took place at about 5.30pm on Saturday near Sungai Petani, Kedah, reported Berita Harian Malaysia.

Young Mohd Firdaus Shahbuddin and his elder sister, Aishah, 5, were in the back seat of the Mitsubishi Galant as it was heading from the family home in Lunas to a shopping centre in Bakar Arang.

Their father, Mr Shahbuddin Md Saad, 36, was driving and his wife, who was not named by the local media, was next to him in the front passenger seat.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the children were playing at the back when Aishah suddenly opened the car door.

ROUNDING A BEND

The car was rounding a bend by a school at that time.

Aishah screamed that a back door was open. The mother turned around and tried to grab hold of her two children.

But she was too late. Her son had tumbled out of the car onto the road.

Panicking, the father could not stop the car in time. The toddler was run over by the family car.

Mr Shahbuddin immediately stopped his car and rushed out. He saw his son lying on the ground and bleeding.

A police source told Harian Metro that the car had run over the boy's head.

The father was in such shock that he could not drive anymore.

He managed to persuade passers-by to help him send his son to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.

But the boy could not be saved. Mohd Firdaus died within minutes and his body was sent for autopsy.

At the hospital morgue, Mr Shahbuddin was too dazed and upset to speak to reporters.

At a media conference on Sunday, a police spokesman said: 'The victim was believed to have fallen out when the door of the Mitsubishi Galant driven by the father opened as it was passing by a school.

'The boy was then run over by the rear wheel of the said vehicle.'

He added that Kuala Muda district's traffic police are still investigating the case, in particular, how the back door ended up being opened during the journey.

Media reports did not say if the children were belted up or in child safety seats in the car.

I always checked is the Door Before I Move [thumbsup]

A very sad case of things happening all at once... If the car wasn't going round a bend, the child might not have fallen out of the car...

A reminder to all parents to strap in your kids always... Have seen some "loose" kids in cars...

Kids are supposed to be strapped in always... I would say that out of 10 cars with kids in it, at least 3 of them have their kids jumping about...
