I was recently thinking to get a used ' 04-05 BMW 520i/ 523i or when my colleague advised me not to get a BMW that is more than 3 yrs old.

He said that BMWs will function prefectly for the first 3 yrs and then problems will start to come in after that.

Are there any truths in this?

Its all hearsay; why don't you go to www.bmw-sg.com Click on their classifieds and buy a beemer from one of the forummers. Least you know their cars are better maintained than others; especially if they're true UDM lovers.

not only bmw, most conti car tend to have this syndrome. it is not that the car is unreliable but with our climate plus mostly city driving in singapore. most parts tend to wear down faster. that is why the replacement for all these wear and tear can be very expensive if u running a car on tight budget.

give u one illustration, in 2004 i brought a opel vectra, within a year i spent 7k on replacing all the wear and tears...every month they car will give u a surprise.

example

1st month - radiator - pay for 600 plus

3nd month - engine mount - pay for another 600 plus

6rd month - aircon problems ...the list go on...

so if u have factor in all these repair cost during the inital purchase price then by all mean go ahead and get it. never own what u can afford but what u can lost after owning it. i let go of my opel after 2 yr because too much of inconvienent of taking the car to mechanics.

i belived these day japanese/korea car parts also have a faster rate of wearing down. so go with what u like and see for yourself hahahaha. but at least u have try it than to seek an alternative and cry over the lost of chance of getting a BMW if u really like it.

The truth is - generalisations come cheap.

And people often generalise, to make themselves seem smart.

When actually they're spouting half truths, and mostly BS.

Any car that is poorly maintained.

I wouldn't buy after 3 years.

Be it Japanese, German or Korean.

There's a BMW e46 3-Series in my family.

9 years old.

220,000km.

Wear & Tear Sure.

But No major problems whatsoever...

the bottom line is branded cars come with branded maintenance

my friend complain to me that how come i change a filter $100 and he change a filter $200+ (double the price). then i said $100 for the filter, $100 for the brand [laugh]

15years old still going strong and engine still pulls up to 6500-7000rpm easily, another 18years old E30 in the family still chugging along well too.

ur fren drive BMW?

those that require alot of $$$ are prob. cars that were not maintained properly during their early life... thus the need for costier repairs, take care of the car regularly and it'll take care of you. Pretty much applies for all other cars

And with Conti cars, once the warranty expires, just bring it to a specialist workshop, no need to go back to the dealership

U want to know ah? Buy one to see whether it's myth or truth lor.

Since warranty by AD is over. Outside workshop labour & parts are not as ex as AD's. But I dunno whether outside workshop have the BMW's diagnostic kits to troubleshoot. It's all $$$ issue. If u can keep up & live with it, sure, anything will be fine.

What I dun like are the diagnostic system they developed in European cars. The extra wiring and computers added supposed to troubleshoot faster and shorten servicing time(reduce labour cost) but bcos of the technology used the cost of these extra gadgets goes to the consumer.

The strategy works in their favour, not only consumers have to return to AD for servicing(cos outside workshop got no diagnostic kit to troubleshoot), they can service more cars in a given amount of time.

Friends Father-in-law has never changed his Altis engine oil in 3 yrs, maybe just top up.

but the car has neber been into workshop for servicing since he drove it out of borneo.

suprisingly it still runs well, jus tat car vibrate more n gear shifting is rougher.

his reason ? car is ur slave, you need not take care of it, jus drive till spoil
