Possible to add tweeters having only stock speakers?

Hi All,

I'm new to ICE.

Just wondering if its possible to just add tweeters to my stock speakers(non-component speakers)?

If its possible, is it just simply connecting the +ve and -ve wires of the tweeters to the stock speakers?

Please advise.

Cheers

I think you have to hook up a crossover to filter out the high freq to your tweeters, low and mids to your stock speakers since you don't have a woofer. If you just connect in parallel, the sound won't be nice.

Fellow bros do correct me if i'm wrong here..

yea... if i not wrong.. you need to add a crossover for best effects...

alternatively... the best way would be to change your stock speakers to component speakers which comes with tweeters, crossovers and new 6.5" speakers...

Ok, i understand now.

Thanks both for your input.

Your stock speakers are most probably co-axial speakers, with the tweeter built right on top of the mid woofer cone. If you're going to add crossovers to co-axial speakers in order to wire additional external tweeters, that will mean that the built-in tweeters will be disabled since the crossovers will now send only the lower frequencies to the mid-woofer.

Of course it's better to just replace the entire set with component speakers, but your idea is still feasible so long as you don't expect really high sound quality levels. The above is just some extra info.

Finally, I learn something new today.

Yup, safe the trouble and change the whole pair of stock speakers to component speakers. If you only add a pair of tweeters, you will need to also add a crosover box to filter the high frequencies to your tweeters and low frequencies to your coaxials in the door (this will effectively "mute" out the tweeters in the coaxial if the high frequencies are not channelled there). Without the crossover box, you will most likely end up blowing your new tweeters as they usually cannot handle frequencies below 2khz.

actually, if u hv the crossover tat comes with the tweeter, u still can do it, except that it does no more then raising the sound image. but due to the resistors inside the crossover, there will b a slight time lapse (very slight to the discerning ear),but overall, with the rear speakers playing, the overlaping lapse time delay will muff sound. in short, it is very primitive way to get sound imaging and wun b decent.

try buying pre-owned component in region of 50W rms. if ur headunit is high power, it will b a large improvement fr where u r now with the stock speaker.

If driven direct from the HU, the component speakers should have a sensitivity of around 90dB and above. Then they will be easy to drive.
