Why should/shouldn't I give way?

Was having some discussion with friends...the topic : What is in our SG drivers' mind when car on different lane trying to switch in front of your car....given you could slow down (without any danger but somehow in convenient), would you give way?

 

Usually few types of action:

 

1. Slower down (ease off pedal) and give way;

2. Since no car behind, just maintain speed, the lane switching car can always do so after my car pass by;

3. Maintain the right of way, do not want to do any adjustment (slow down or pick up);

4. Pick up speed - especially if no signal given ;

5. Depend on mood.....

 

What would you all usually do? What is the 1st thing that come to your mind when you notice the intend of such situation? Why should I slow down and give way? or Why should I not slow down and give way?

1 - sometimes when you slow down, the other driver couldnt tell and assume you wouldnt let him pass, wait for you to pass before filtering, waste both parties effort

which leads to either 2,3,4.

 

also very dependent on mood

so i think its a case of faster car first, sad but true

If its not heavy traffic, ill just proceed as per normal. Either he cut in front of me and step it up or behind me. But if its like peak hour scenario, then ill just let him cut, wun hurt me much

i thought long and hard about this . in general, for unimportant things, most people are happy to give but not happy if you just take something from them, esp. without asking.

 

for drivers, most feel that the lane in front of them "belong" to them. so if you ask nicely (ie put hand out) they let you in. if you cut without signal (never ask), they get pissed. if you signal, unfortunately, it is treated as not asking politely.

 

unfortunately, this doesn't work for filtering right to left.... unless u driving a topless car.

Important criteria is for them to signal in advance. If theres space and at reasonable speed i will definately let him in. But thosejokers who cut in and THEN signal well... they can stick their car keys where the sun don't shine.

Fully understand your point...u must be a quick action driver

 

So let say u are driving at a speed, a slower car from left/right lane signal way ahead of you, to enetr into your lane (& in front of your car)....would you slow down (said your mood is netural) and give way? or you feel tha if this slow car when come in front of you, will slow down your speed (not much but a bit), would you actually flash or pick up speed to deny it from doing so?

let's say the element of "cut" is not present.....its just able to "nicely" switch into but without signal....what do you think the driver's reaction will be?

 

one question, must one be necessarily "angry" when someone "appear" to be rude/not polite, in a case of lane switching?

Depends on whether there is vehicle behind me. If there's a big truck right behind me, hell no! If there's no vehicle behind me, no as well since he can cut behind me.

I will always take action (1) slow down and give way. If I buang into the idiot, whether I am right or wrong, in Singapore the car behind is deemed to be in the wrong 99% of the time.

so no situation of a car in about the same speed /close position would have chance to come in front of you....

 

For big truck behind...I can understand....

 

For no car behind....why don't you give way...?

 

How about if the lane switching vehicle is a truck? LL give way but would be very piss?
