Concerns with using K&N Filters

Lemme reason again, a stock paper filter flows just shy of a new K&N but with better filtration.

So over time the K&N and paper will become restricted right? Just change the stock one every year lor!

Here's the economics of my reason:

Stock: $19 each

K&N: $85 (cheapest, I got mine for $120 [mad] )

Changing every year means the total cost for the 10yr COE period will be $190 for using stock filter. That's about double over 10yrs which is nothing compared to all the crap we have to pay for our cars.

Using a K&N have risks of contaminating the MAF sensor and letting more dust particles through the filter. Sure I've used a K&N when I was green to the car scene, now I'm using stock paper filter and car drives just as well.

To prove my point, my 0-100km/h on Gtech does not differ much with K&N or stock filter, just about 0.2secs diff and both type of filters are used (not brand new).

Hmm..yeah i heard that the K&N would contaminate the MAF sensor if you put too much oil. So in your opinion its not worth it? [crazy]

Rare cases and cases of oversight will result in a $$ MAF replacement. My friend kena once but luckily he claimed the MAF under warranty, $600 part!

I decided to play it safe and stick to cheap paper filter and replacing often.

This example is totally irrelevant:

- Would U take your oil filter out and "clean" it for re-use? [:p]

Well get the stock filter price first then decide lor.....

If the stock filter is priced through the roof (like one of my friend's $88 a filter) then get the K&N for both "performance" and economy advantage. [;)]

Hmmm... u only change your air filter once a year?

Most air filter change interval is 40k or 2yrs, that's what Volvo specs as well. [;)]

Hi TB,

Does the use of stock filter result in lesser mileage returned per tank of petrol? How often do u blow the paper filter?

No sure about other makes, but my brick response to K&N or paper filter on economy is about the same. No drastic changes between the two, I usually change the paper filter yearly and just knock out the dust every 5k

i disagree. KNN filter gives a better air flow to ure throttle as compare to stock paper filter. A better air flow gives u more power, imagine when u apply full throttle and there is a bad filter that prevent free air flow. This will cause power loss. Thus, good filter gives u power as well as greater milleague.

Hi G,

For me, I place a few pieces of newspaper underneath the filter, spray it with the cleaning solution liberally. The cleaning solution will bring out the dirt etc. Let it rest for 10 mins. Subsequently, wash under running water until u can see the white colour of the cotton. Dry the filter naturally before spraying the filter oil.

If you're in a hurry...can actually placed the filter in the engine compartment to speed up the drying process. Of course the engine must be still hot lah [;)] One of my friends do this in the morning, when he just reach office...wash the filter and quickly placed in the hot engine compartment. At the end of the day, the filter is dry already...all he need to do is to apply oil...reinstall and ready to go [:)][:)]

At least your friend can still claim that under warranty....what car is that?

For my case, was told by SA that the whole throttle body is void the moment I used K&N [:(]

To wash the K&N Filter is quite easy....

You need to get the solution from K&N and the oil. Dun need the big bottle....the small set will be enuff for at least 4 cleaning session liao (that is about 4 yrs) Beside that get a small brush. Those use for painting one will do. Cost about 70cents ???

1) take out the filter and knock any larger particles out of the filter. Then taking the brush, brush out those dirt than can be dislodge.

2) Next spray the cleaning solution on the filter. Be Kiasu a bit and spray both side. Spray on the cleaner side (side that is nearest to your throttle body) and thne spray on the dirty side. Let the filter sit for a min or two before flushing off with water. (Take note to wash the dirt out from the cleaner side so as not to drive the dirt further into the filter.

3) Shake off all the water and let it dry. (At this stage, the filter may still appear reddish to you....but its okay one. If you are in a hurry....use a hairdryer minus the heat. Just use the air to dry the filter out.

4) After its dry, put the filter oil on to the filter. This part dun be kiasu okay....just run the oil over the pleats of the filter. I usually make two pass....once from left to right and then right to left. After that let the filter stand for 5mins or so. If there are any more unoiled part, then just drop a bit on that part can liao.

Most pple make the mistake is to over apply the oil. The surgical cloth need time to absorb the oil into the cloth. So many pple think that the oil not enuff and apply more. And the cloth will be soaking wet in oil hence causing damage to your throttle body.

Replace your filter and hear your car say....."Ricola.........." [laugh][laugh]
