Meadelx200 1st Gear May 29, 2008 Share May 29, 2008 Just drove back from a business trip in Malaysia a few hours ago. Was driving about 110km/h along NSE after Malacca towards Singapore on a 2nd lane of a 3 lanes expressway. Saw from view mirror a far but fast approaching Ambulance on a 1st lane with blinking head lights. Car in front give way after some time. The head light blinking ambulance then slowed down a bit and filtered to the 2nd lane about 2 cars behind me. After a few seconds of tailgating the car behind mine, this car filtered to the right to let the ambulance passed. All this while the 1st lane was pretty clear. Next the headlight blinking ambulance was tailgating me (about 110km/h)on the 2nd lane. I was not sure whether if the ambulance is trying to ask me to give way on the 2nd lane. After a few seconds the amubulance filtered to the left speeded up and went back to 2nd lane. The car in front of it filtered right and let the ambulance passed. Subsequently the ambulance exited left. My question : Am I wrong not to Give Way to the ambulance on the 2nd lane although I thought the ambulance should rightfully filtered and keep on the Right (the right is clear)for emergency ? ↡ Advertisement
Beehive3783 Turbocharged May 29, 2008 Share May 29, 2008 There are no fast and hard rules, but my opinion is not to have any emergency vehicles be held up behind you.
Silver_blade Turbocharged May 29, 2008 Share May 29, 2008 Doesn't matter which lane...just give way.
Zedzee 1st Gear May 29, 2008 Share May 29, 2008 bro, it doesn't matter which lane the ambulance is, just left them pass whenever they come up behind you...
Sky61 1st Gear May 29, 2008 Share May 29, 2008 doesn't matter which lane u r in, as long as the ambulance ON its siren,i'll give way. but if siren not on even on the 1st lane, it means its not an emergency/or no sick passenger inside/going to the mech for servicing/etc.. Meadelx200 1st Gear May 29, 2008 Author Share May 29, 2008 OK, next time will give way to any emergency vehicles. But in this case I don't quite understand why the ambulance driver wanted to keep in the 2nd lane which was full of cars as the 1st lane was pretty clear all the time. Maybe he wanted to exit the Left soon and probably the 2nd lane is more convenient for him or maybe he does not want to hold up the fast car from 1st lane. Actually this is the first time I saw 'Blinking' Headlight from an ambulance and not those typical 'Blinking' Siren Roof Light.
Fatfat Neutral Newbie May 29, 2008 Share May 29, 2008 It always better to err on the side of caution. We have nothing to lose giving way to ambulances/emergency vehicles. Or for that matter, giving way to any other road users.
Zedzee 1st Gear May 30, 2008 Share May 30, 2008 He probably thought he was going to exit soon and since lane 1 is clear for vehicles on lane 2 to switch over, so he kept to 2nd lane, hoping vehicles on lane 2 will make use of lane 1 instead.

Upandcoming Neutral Newbie June 1, 2008 Share June 1, 2008 im just quite intrigued why this even happens to be a question to u, or so it seems. my fren, if you are the casualty in the ambulance and in great pain, would u appreciate that kind motorist in front of the ambulance u r travelling in giving way to you so as to alleviate your pain for 2 mins lesser? food for thought? just give way to any emergency vehicles...Police, Traffic Police, Auxillary Police, Ambulances both Civil and Private, Military Police etc...they have a reason. or so we give them that implicit trust. you would appreciate if you are a victim. cheers and stay safe
Lobangking88 Neutral Newbie June 1, 2008 Share June 1, 2008 Give way at once. no need to think about why the ambulance didnt go 3rd or 1st lane. Give it watever space that its needed.
Yaloryalor 5th Gear June 2, 2008 Share June 2, 2008 If I were you, I will also wonder why but I will still give way.

Friendstar Supercharged June 2, 2008 Share June 2, 2008 but honestly la... TS's just curious when the ambulance didnt choose the overtaking lane when it is obviously empty.
Scenium Neutral Newbie June 2, 2008 Share June 2, 2008 When you are using a 3 lane especially in Malaysia, when there are a vehicle closing on you on second lane, it's either. 1)mostly they are small/big lorries or speed limited vehicle (less than 70km/h) 2)underpowered, small or old cars so please give way, by moving to the left when got opportunity, because the most right lane will be used by fast moving cars. In your scenario, it must be the safety habit of the Ambulance driver, not to used the right most lane. Furthermore, if he used the right most lane, he has to overtake you at higher speed. This may be dangerous. So just give way, move to the left, and let the ambulance move at constant speed. ↡ Advertisement
