Direction needed: Cameron Highland to Lake Kenyir

I will be going on a road trip to Cameron Highland and then to Lake Kenyir in Terengganu. I found out that the 2nd East-West Highway is not opened to public yet but there are some who has driven on it to cut across the M'sia peninsular.

Can anyone advise me on how to use the 2nd East-West Highway to go from Cameron Highland to Lake Kenyir?

So far, I knew that one has to drive to Gua Musang and then head towards Kuala Krai. But somewhere along the route, you have to go into the Taman Negara National Park in order to re-join the 2nd East-West Highway.

Don't know if the new highway is ready.

I came from Lake Kenyir last September and tried to head towards Cameron, but turn back after a short while due to lack of petrol. Didn't want to get stuck in no man's land.laugh.gif

According to the latest malsingmap, the route from Cameron is 59 / C7 and T156 to Lake Kenyir, distance about 172 miles. It's going towards Gua Musang first.

No need to go up north towards K Krai.

Ask a few malaysian colluegues here..Upon reaching Gua Musang, head towards Route 3 using Federal Route 8 all the way to Kuala Terengganu.. Not too sure about the route though... as looks like you be taken the route less travelled... but it will be one hell of a road trip for sure [dizzy]

In Malaysia just open your mouth and ask. [nod] The map is just for guidance.

People there are friendly if you are polite and nice. No way can get lost. That is the thrill of driving out-of-the-way destinations. Its the journey and the people you meet that makes it fun. [thumbsup]

Aren't you lucky? I just did Lake Kenyir to Gua Musang both ways.

I can only tell you about that section.

As you enter Gua Musang, look out for the sign that points you towards Kota Bahru (I think it's a right turn). Follow that route and you will go past a rest stop on your right (there is only one the whole way). Keep driving until you go past a Shell station on your left. Here is where it gets confusing.

The next part of the highway has not been completed. There is a 23 km detour through some oil palm plantation roads before it hits the highway.

After the Shell station, look out for a makeshift orangey-red sign that says something in Malay like "Alternative Road to Kota Bahru/Kuala Berang". I think they spelt "Alternative" as "Alternatif". Ask at the Shell station for directions to Tasik Kenyir (or Kuala Berang) if you are not sure.

Once you're in the detour, keep following the occasional orangey-red signs. You shouldn't drive fast on this road as heavy vehicles use it and it is full of potholes and melted tarmac humps.

After 23 kms, you will reach a cross junction and get out of the oil palm plantation. You should take the right at the cross junction and you're pretty much on your way to the Tasik Kenyir. Left is where the rest of the new highway is being completed.

This part is great driving. 160+ kph but be careful as there are 2 very short sections of road still undergoing repair. This stretch is about 70+ kms long.

Enjoy Tasik Kenyir. Staying at the spa? Deluxe rooms have lake facing views and are renovated.

This is the best I can do as I did it without a map or GPS. Just drove and explored.

From Gua Musang, look for Highway 8 (towards Kota Bahnru), then hit for T156. This will connect u to Lake Kenyir. Be warned of potholes along T156 (see map). Got my car towed back to Sin (engine crankcase big hole!) in Dec last year. Painful experience.

The drive along Lake Kenyir (in tregganu state) is wonderful. Good road and scenic. Roads at Kelantan side is terrible. Do be careful.

Thanks everyone for all the help in directing me on the right direction. I'm sure I'll find my way from Cameron to Lake Kenyir with your help. I hope those plantation roads and roads under construction aren't too rough cause I'm just driving a saloon car and not a SUV.

I'll be driving up to Ipoh first then Cameron then Lake Kenyir and back to Singapore via the East Coast road. Hope my car can take it cause it just undergone an ECU repair. I do this kind of long trips yearly. Sometimes, I wish I have a SUV.
