I just booked our first trip to Osaka for May, on promo fares from Peach.

Staying 5N but initially booked some nights in a hotel on a corner with Route-25, directly south of Osaka-Namba station. I had another choice before at Yodoyabashi near the river so now don't know where to go.

Jian sian... Skoot flight delay. Should have taken off 1 hr ago now still no sign of boarding.

This trip stayed near Osaka station/Umeda MRT. Also very convenient with lots of shops/makan except a bit far from the canal shops near Namba.

PS. discovered this Osaka Amazing Pass. Good value but take note it is not 24hr cycle, more like 14 or 15hr.

Price seems quite high unless used also used for boat trips and cruises - we don't typically "enter" places.

I have a lot more to investigate but hopefully your badly affected by Scoot like others.

I always stay at Umeda area, easier to get to Kyoto and other nearby cities (save for Nara), nearer to most of my favorite eateries and not as business as Shin-Osaka area.

@Volvobrick any good restaurants to recommend from recent Osaka trip?

Nothing exceptional during this trip as I didn't book way in advance so lots were fully booked. The early closure during new year eve/day made it worse.

We are deciding between one-night in either Kyoto or Nara, picking a hotel with Onsen.

Heard a few negatives regarding Kyoto with regards attitudes etc. so for a more relaxing trip am thinking Nara but have no ideas where to go other than the park...... mid-May.

Despite the maddening crowd these days, Kyoto is still a very pretty and cultural city and there is much to see if you haven't visited for a while.  Nara has a few historical Buddhist temples that are worth seeing. For me, I will opt to stay overnight in Kyoto and to cover Nara on a day trip. Just avoid early May if possible, it is Japan golden week.

If you want an affordable onsen hotel in Kyoto at a good location, I highly recommend Onyado Nono Kyoto Shichijo. The water is piped in elsewhere, so it is not some city hotel with heated water. The rooms are very small, so I will usually pay up slightly for a bigger room.

For real onsen experience near Osaka, most people will go to Arima or Kinosaki.

We are heading out on Peach on 15th so will miss the busy period so can look into my Kyoto hotel choices again.

Turbocharged

Was in Osaka just before Xmas.. spent a few days there before moving to Kyoto.

Stayed a couple of times around the Shisaibashi area as the underground malls makes walking easy.

Apartment 11 and Mimaru chains were family friendly.
