"saw one posting before that ABS is a must"

Hi! there, Elixir,

ABS is definitely a critical requirement in a car. That's if you don't know how to operate the ABS system, you'll most probably be critical injured, as the car won't stop in time.

Same sentiments here...ABS only became a common feature in small/medium sizes cars recently....anyway, this feature is only effective in wet conditions most of the time. [sweatdrop]

Supersonic

ABS, airbags & EBD r not luxury items. One cannot appreciate it's benefits until it's too late.

ARE CARS FITTED WITH ABS HAVE SHORTER BRAKING DISTANCE? This is a question to be asked because in most advertisements of ABS, it shows a car with ABS avoiding obstacle by gaining control of the car while a car without ABS has no steering control. In other words, ABS cars are allowed to steer clear of its obstacle by enable the driver to turn away. But if there is no absolutely way of turning the car to the side, ie next lane and the only way is forward, will car with ABS allow drivers to stop in time compared to a car without ABS. Looking at the technical aspect, an ABS car works because the brake is release many thousands of time per sec, does it mean that it will stop faster than a car which has skidded? Anyone with experience with cars that has option to turn ABS on and off?

Comments welcome. [:)][:)]

it will be good if the car is equip with one. Look for an empty road with plenty of clearance, do some evasive maneuvers and orientate yourself with the abs system.

abs system do not built the same way; every make and model perform differently according to its software loaded.

Hi,

Like what our bros have mentioned, ABS activation differs from car to car.

It's great to have ABS [nod] , but it's even better to control a car without ABS through the proper mastering of braking techniques [;)]

I've test driven ABS & Non-ABS cars for their braking distance, and have had encounters where the ABS function failed to work, even after slamming on the brakes [sweatdrop]

So fundamentally, it depends on the proper activation of the ABS system of your car, and if your car doesn't have one, don't fret ... the experts here will be more than willing to loan you their 'expertise' [:)][rolleyes]

I think ABS is a good invention. U can still maneovre yr car well when u brake very hard in the wet. A good safety feature. But come to think about it.. the Motoring mag sayz the Getz has ABS. Some SEs at Komoco n most of the other bros here says no too, the Hyundai website sayz the Getz has ABS, EBD and even airbags.. [dizzy][dizzy][shakehead] I speachless liao..

I think the braking distance effect depends. You are right, basically idea of ABS is so that it allows you to retain steering control on hard braking so that you can still control the car. W/o ABS, once your tyres lock and skid, there is no steering control.

That said, guess cars with ABS require less distance to stop on wet conditions as the rapid pumping avoids tyres locking and skidding on wet surface - which effectively means you have hardly any grip and hence harder to stop. But on dry roads, dunno. The same may apply, but recall someone once told me on dry road if slam brakes and hold it, the 'skidding' effect is supposed to stop you sooner - plus of course wear out badly that patch of tyre that locked onto the road at that point.
