    • Car is a want. I take loan as cash otherwise used for loan is used to generate higher returns than loan interest

    • Car is a want. I pay in full as I do not have good means to guarantee higher return than loan interest.

    • Car is a want. I take loan because I don't have enough money and depends on current job income to pay off monthly installment.

It's always been an interest to me to know which category of buyer Singaporeans fall into when comes to buying a car.

i think there are many more factors than waht is listed here.

Say you have some cash to spare to pay off the downpayment. Say 30k.

If you had gotten a Toyota vios, THIS CAR IS A NEED.

If you had gotten a 7 Series, THIS CAR IS A WANT.

These days, esp in singapore, what you drive conveys more that just you have the means to get from A to B quickly. Many associate your car with your character and achievements and such (successful campaigning by the car makers). So Need or Want.. hard to tell.

Unless you NEED a expensive car to validate your own worth. And THAT IS SAD. I have seen so many guys paying thru their nose to get a 150k car to impress, and no money to pay for any other things. Stinge like mad.

I have a lady friend, told me there was once she had dinner with this guy. They chatted about car... the guy said ' I have a SUV at home'. My friend nodded...quiet..

He added in

" ITS A LEXUS"

Faint..

Perhaps I should define NEED here.

When it is a NEED, it means you cannot do/detrimental to do without it. So in Cat 1, without a car, it degrades your net income. E.g. otherwise you have to spend more time losing your earning opportunity.

I would infer from your given example that the car is, FIRST and FOREMOST, a need. And you are right to say that choosing a 7 series instead is a WANT because the extra luxury is actually not NEEDED. You get it because you WANT it (and it is your DESIRE and not your NEED to have a BMW - for whatever reason e.g. to impress other people etc ).

Actually, it is very easy to tell a NEED from a WANT if you have answer to my 1st para.

It is hard to tell because your HEART is trying to take control over your HEAD knowledge.

At the end of the day, you make a choice whether you want to UPGRADE a NEED to a WANT.

Same thing about housing. A roof above your head is a NEED for most people. But it is now a WANT for many because minimally to these people, it must be 4 room flat or higher class. But is it NEEDED? No.

For most working people, I can confidently say TRANSPORT is a NEED, not CAR. For TRANSPORT, there is a choice of PUBLIC transport that is able to serve the NEED well for some. Yet if they choose to go for a CAR when they cannot afford and public transport can actually serve their need, then it is not so wise. Of course if they have enough cash to WANT it, it would be perfectly fine!
