Hi guys,

Noticed that the weights on my taiwanese rims from stamford have dropped off. I can only see the double sided sticker which was used to attach the weights.

Is there anything i should do or do i simple leave it as it is?

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers [thumbsup]

If it's the front rims, do balancing right away. You'll feel the imbalance on the wheels.

If it's the rear rims, you can quite safely leave it alone.

Pardon me if i sound like a newbie.

But those weights are like so small ( assuming we're talking abt the same thing)

In what way can it contribute to the overall balancing of the wheel.

They are those small silver rectangular things that are stuck on the rim insides right?

They seem like just stuck on ....

What are their real uses?

cheers

Most of the rims are not perfectly balanced during manufacturing. Furthermore, the same goes for the tyre. After mounting the tyre to the rim, typically, off-wheel balancing is performed.

The rim with tyre is rotated at a certain speed, and the machine is able to detect the amount of weights required to keep the rim w/tyre balanced. The weight can be added either to the inner side or outer side of the rim.

There are 2 types of balance weights, the snap on type (which looks more ugly) and the stick-on type, which looks nicer, but drops off more easily. The weights are in multiples of 5g. And trust me, un-balanced front rims really irritates at high speed. Running with un-balanced rims for long periods would strain the suspension and steering components too.

The weights might seem a few tens of grams, but at high speed u have centrifugal force which 'pulls' the weight away from the center hub. This makes them weigh many many times more their actual weight, the faster the wheel spins.

Think of it like G force on the centrifuge. [nod]

Firstly, can you be sure it drop off?

Those weights are not in its fix position, sometimes the mechanic need to remove it and place it somewhere else thus the double sided trace.

hi all...

I've changed my rims last saturday.

However, only today I've noticed, a whole strip, maybe around 10 or more of the balancing metal pieces were used for my front 2 rims.

I've checked the rear rims, it only had 2 or 3.

partly my fault becos I did not monitor them doing the balancing. only the last rear wheel then I went to them. They had a hard time doing balancing, changing new rims and tyres a few times.

so is it normal for new rims/tyres to need so many of the metal pieces?

do I have any grounds to ask them to replace the rims?

thx in advance for ur inputs

Which shop did you go to? Yes, it could be almost impossible to balance rims that were previously wrapped/cracked.

Did the shop remove all the (previously installed) balance weights before doing the balancing?

my rims are from stamford tyres. How much does it cost for the balancing if i go back there? Is this called high speed balancing??

what's e difference between the 2?

I just went to check. 2 of those weights came out from the rear right wheels. Can i quite safely leave it alone as what huggable says?

And do i only do the balancing on 1 wheel or for all 4?
