Advice on SODIMM Rams Needed.

Just bought a laptop. The OEM gave 3Gb of DDR2 667MHz SODIMM RAM.

I just read that to fully utilize the DDR2 effect I must have identical pair. So then, I just realise that kenna bluff by this OEM again.

So yesterday open the ram cover, remove the 1Gb and slot in a new 2Gb RAM that I bought from Sim Lim. Then I realise that the brands are different though they are same 667MHz.

Can I ask for advice if it is necessary to have both rams of from the same brand?

I think just as long as the same speed okie then it's regardless of brand...

If you have 2 pieces of ram with different speeds i.e. 667MHz and 800MHz, then they'll be operating at the lower speed (667MHz)...

wah who your oem.

buylaptop, worst case scenerio i rather get dell... they do advise you of technical limitations like this.

and btw,, certain chipsets already support asymmetrical DDR2 configurations. its only the older chipsets that you need 2 of the same ram capacity

most newer dell chipsets already support asy DDR2 configurations.

go check out what chipset model is ur intel, then refer to intel.com.

or just open a support ticket with dell. [thumbsup]

the 'same ddr2 ram' thing is only applicable to older intel chipsets.

thats as much as i know. i don't work for dell though [;)] i just have a vostro laptop.

Differing brands are ok, most of the time.

But what Bro Gh05tss mentioned is valid, if you're refering to Dual-Channel ability, provided your notebook supports that.

If the notebook doesn't support dual-channel, or there's no intention to utilise the dual-channel function, then it doesn't matter whether brand A mix with brand B, or 1GB mix with 2GB.

Extracted from Dell site for 1420

==> Up to 4GB2 shared3 Dual Channel 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM provides blazing performance.
