ST: CHC - Donation Refund

I think they were hoping for the problem to go away by itself. Giving a NO answer quickly to someone in need, does not gel well with their image as a church, right? [gossip]

Anyway, let's wait for the reply to appear in ST forum, should be interesting...

Let's not talk about the refunds, YET.

If that person is in such dire needs with medical conditions, shouldn't the church at least lend a helping hand?

Especially when he contributed to the church before.

i don't usually make a post.. but I have been to this church once and I will never go anymore [shakehead]

all the talks are about donate to the church...totally no transparency at all.

after that, i see young members 'comparing' how much they donated... [shakehead]

14 months to learn church's decision on donation refund

I WAS a member of City Harvest Church and left the church in December 2006. By the time I left, I had donated $5,500 to the church for its building fund project. After I left, I suffered financial difficulties. I was in between jobs and there were hefty, unforeseen medical bills. I was told by my friends and church members that I could seek a refund for my donation because there were similar precedents.

I asked two church leaders in my group, that is, the cell group leader and the zone leader, whether such a refund was possible, and they replied that the refund would not be a problem. The next month, I was told to send an official request via e-mail to the zone leader after I asked my cell group leader regarding the status of my request. Despite constant reminders, I received no response for months.

That was when I told my zone leader about my financial situation and the medical bills. He promised to expedite my request. Still, nothing happened. Finally, after 14 months since I first made my request for a refund with my two leaders, I received an official e-mail which said: 'We are unable to comply due to our policy on donations.' If it was merely a case of policy rules, why did it take so long to tell me I couldn't get a refund? This, on top of the fact that I was told at the onset that I could obtain a refund. I understand that my donation was freely given, but why the false hope?

Only consolation to Mr Jeffery is that he is storing his riches in Heaven, or so they say in the bible.

Let's break this whole letter up ;

- he declared that he is no longer a member of CHC.

- there is a time lapse(not clarified by the writer) between after his leaving CHC and the onset of his financial difficulties.

- he could have been ill-informed by friends and church members or he could have thought he have heard from.

- his request was sent to a Zone Leader, not to the church.

- whatever false hope was given by his friends and not the church.

So I find this letter should not have been directed to the church at all.

watever it is, surely it is basic courtesy on the side of the church to at least make an effort to give an earlier reply that it cannot accede to the guy's request instead of taking 14 mths to reply. I think expecting a reply within 1-2 mths should not be an unreasonable expectation.

If the worry is abt image, its very easy. Just reply with a No(no refund on any donations made), but added at the same time the church would try their best to offer their assistance and support in some other ways to help him tide over the crisis and advise him to get in touch with relevant personnel to discuss further..See? that's the problem with a lot of organisations in Singapore...poor CRM skills..ended up only getting more bad publicity for themselves..

I went once and felt disturbed by a couple of phenonmeon I saw:

1)Members selling and promoting Sun's albums and posters within the church compound

2)When the church service abt to start, the first thing that went on the PA was annoucement on Sun Ho's recent major achievements in the record industry (such as achieving platinum sales in some countries) ahead of anything else.

3)Overly lavish building

Felt it was over commercialised and a lot of basking in personal glory + promoting of idol worshipping. [;)]
