Sony 1st Gear December 8, 2011 Share December 8, 2011 the video are all showing tyres of donkey years old... locally, i think most "old" tyres are at most 2-3 years but then, people should always buy with their eyes open
Jayy25 6th Gear December 8, 2011 Share December 8, 2011 mate, think about it... he gives discount despite that fact you did not asked. he even admitted they are a year old. Given most merchants i doubt they will be so kind and honest. Seriously you can always be nasty if you have mixed feelings. by rejecting the tyres. no point pay the $ give a rather negative post then ask others for advice if tyres are acceptable. kinda of very dropping the brick on your foot and then ask doc "how ah.. can heal before my marathon tomorrow" anyway... managed your expectation.. new tyres aren't going to have reasonable pricing nor discounted tyres aren't going to be a day old ones. Pixel18 1st Gear December 8, 2011 Share December 8, 2011 In this case, the merchant did not withold any info from the customer as the YOM is readily available on the product. There is no obligation for the merchant to volunteer any info which is explicitly available. He may, if asked, clarify as he did in this case. Besides, to begin with, the customer did not buy an "expired" product.

Mate, i think you need to get the facts right. I said I left with mixed feelings, meaning on one hand i was hoping for newer tyres (DOM 2011), on the other hand i wanted to trust Uncle Frankie cos i have been patronizing his shop for many yrs (though i only see him once every 2yrs). Eventually, I left the shop with the tyres, but also with this big question mark in me. This brought me to the query which I have posted earlier. Nothing wrong with seeking advice here right? While i am grateful to the other bros for sharing their knowledge and views on 1-yr old tyres, i thought your analogy of the 'brick' is nonsensical and doesnt add value to the discussion. If you chose to interpret my post more as a complaint than seeking advice, i have no choice then :) And yes, I do appreciate Uncle Frankie for giving me a discounted tyre set when I have not even started any bargaining. But I would be more grateful if he could have upfront let me decide between an older set (of discounted price) or a newer set (at market price). You just have to bother with the constructive comments and not those "non technical" comments..been seeing the same type of comments from other threads..You have already explicitly requested for new tyres in the first place..But seriously, I think you are getting a good deal out of it..1 YO tyre is considered new and you get a fair bit of discount :)

Ultimately, what i am more interested in is whether 1-yr old new tyres are deem acceptable by the majority, and NOT whether i have a CASE to fight or whatsoever (which is ridiculous in my opinion). And also as an awareness for potential buyers to check the tyre datecodes first before purchase, if they are particular abt it. Afterall, this is supposed to be a technical and helpful forum, yeah ;)

Saw a car with two rear Firanza tires DOM 2006 but new and not used before, heard owner gotten it from Msia for only $50RM for both pcs. Owner fitted it to the rear, last week owner crashed his car as the rear wheels did not have enough traction. The rear of the car swayed outwards and eventually took out the whole right side of the car. Bottom line is, one year old new tires are still considered new and good! Anything more than three years old left on the shelf should really need some consideration even if it is dirt cheap.

Jeff23 Neutral Newbie March 19, 2012 Share March 19, 2012 Been a regular at frankie's shop. Tyres as long kept in sheltered areas. Can be kept up to 3 years and still consider safe to use. Frankie actually quite up front about everything. But we have to remember he deals with different customers every day with each person having different mindset. Cos maybe some don't mind 1 year old tyres and some mind. But it all boils down how much knowledge the customers has on tyres. Best thing about frankie is, if u feel something not right. Feel free to speak up. He will listen to you. Cheers.

Sean_philip_lim Neutral Newbie July 9, 2012 Share July 9, 2012 Hi all, Just went to Frankie on Saturday to fit my new 215/60/R16 Yokohama Advan dB tyres. They are fresh out of the factory as the manufacturing date states "242012". As a novice who just wants a decent pair of tyres for his car, my two cents worth are as such. 1)Extremely quiet 2)Feels lighter off the steering wheel than my previous pair of Michelin XM1 3)More grippy when it comes to cornering (I basically feel more confident in the car) Frankie's service was fast, efficient and fuss free. Pricing is also reasonable too(paid $180 per donut) Will definitely be back to give Uncle Frankie my business!

Stiener 1st Gear July 18, 2012 Share July 18, 2012 No doubt he is offering one of the best price in the market. I doubt his professionalism. I bought a set of Yokohama Tyres from him in Apr 12. After driving for 3 weeks, I noticed a large crack (IMO). As I cannot assess how deep it was, I ask my wife to drive to Soh Tyres for Frankie to take a look. Frankie did an inspection and told my wife that it is safe to drive and ask her to quickly drive off. I was still not convinced and for safety reason, I rather get a 2nd opinion. So I told my wife to drive to the distributor, YHI to see if it is covered under warranty. A guy took all 4 tyres out and did an inspection. He used a flat screw driver and slide it into the crack and found that it is quite deep and deemed not safe to drive unless I want to take the risk. The crack could be caused by running over some sharp objects on the road and not covered under the warranty. Hence, we decided to get a brand new tyre. My point is, given Frankie's experience, how was he so positive that the cut wasn't deep with his naked eye. One thing is for sure, if I listened to Frankie and continued driving with the damaged tyre and it burst while I am driving (ferrying my wife and baby) along CTE at 90kmh. Can I make a claim against Soh Tyres for any losses? I really doubt so.

Think it's not so much of how positive he was with his naked eye but rather can't be bothered to do a thorough check based on how you relate. Typical of "budget" shops. Sometimes its good to pay a little more for after sales service which can be more meticulous. ↡ Advertisement
