the pitch

MR CHARLES Wee, 22, got his driving licence two weeks after he turned 18 - and went on to get into five accidents within two years.

In his fourth, most serious one in May 2005, the then 19-year-old polytechnic student's Toyota Rav 4, a gift from his father, turned turtle near Upper Aljunied Road.

He said he was driving four friends home at about 3am after a night of drinking when, egged on by his tipsy passengers, he took a bend at 80kmh.

He lost control of the vehicle and it flipped over, shattering its windscreen. Two of his three friends, who were unbelted in the rear seat, landed in hospital with minor injuries; neither he nor his front-seat passenger - both wearing seat belts - were hurt.

Charged with reckless driving, he got off with nine demerit points and a $200 fine. Since then, he has had a clean driving record.

slapping bans on young riders as well

http://www.straitstimes.com/Free/Story/STIStory_210389.html

RIDING pillion is proving more dangerous than handling the motorcycle itself - at least for youngsters, according to a study by doctors at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

Over a three-year period, 96 motorcyclists and pillion riders aged 21 and younger were admitted to the hospital. Fifteen per cent, or 14 of them, died of their injuries later.

Although pillion riders formed the smaller group of 24 people, seven of them died compared to seven bikers.

That makes the death rate for young pillion riders three times that of young bikers.

Said main author and registrar Dr Leong Quor Meng: 'If you are a pillion rider and you are young, the odds are against you.

'And if you are a young biker and reckless, you are putting your pillion at risk.'

notice the similar tones....

Neutral Newbie

With the recent spate of accidents.

E.g. 2 young deaths in an MX5 along 6th Ave

E.g. 2 young deaths in a Lancer along Old Thomson Rd

E.g. 1x trashed up Lambo along Tanglin

E.g. 2x trashed up Porsches along NS highway

I think its not such a bad idea to get some bad drivers off the road.

I love driving myself. But there's just alot of idiocy amongst our roads

Problem is there's no real way to pinpoint the actual group of culprits.

They cut across all ages/sex/classes.

Our policing is flawed.

Speeding doesn't always make you a bad driver.

Bad driving makes you a bad driver.

- Kids w/o proper driving experience & too much ego/enthusiam is one group.

- Rich idiots with performance cars & no understanding of their vehicles is another.

- Idiots in delivery vehicles that treat their breadvans like Evos/STIs

- Taxi drivers who think they own the road. that driving long hours = good driving skills.

- Aunties/Tai tai's in big & small cars. Clueless to the traffic conditions around them. Just driving however they please. cutting across lanes w/o indication etc.

Spend less money on ERP Gantries.

More on driver education.

But somethings are hard to change.

People can't drive/shouldn't drive - BUT can afford to.

"Undergraduate Alicia Lee, 19, is a sterling example of such youthful bravado.

She pooh-poohs safety belts, saying she is not going to start using them.

'I don't think I will be that unlucky to get into an accident,' she said.

She does not observe speed limits and claims not to know what they are . And she believes - mistakenly - that her international driving licence excuses her from following Singapore's traffic laws."

I CANNOT imagine such smug people exist.

give me a hummer, i drive in front of her and slam my brakes

one off the road.

I think this Alicia Lee does not deserve to hold any driving license. And what stupidity it is to assume that having an int'l license equals not having to follow Singapore traffic laws. I don't know if she is stupid or just plain ignorant & stupid. Undergraduate somemore. What uni one? [thumbsdown]

Not too sure about the hidden agenda, but the facts seem to link to higher premium soon.

As for banning young drivers, the young has to learn yet needs to be guided, it is a tough call for anyone. It is like catching all the young fishes, and species will extinct.

The only hidden agenda, is to build up a case to justify a higher Insurance premiums for everyone, especially the young.

Will a foreigner holding an international licence kane demarit points and $$ fines?

If your car is caught by the lazer camera, and you report the driver to be a foreigner, will the police summon the driver or the owner? Anyone?

By the way I'm >30 [;)] but we were all young once...
