sorry i am a total noob so pls pls forgive me if wat i am going to say is a total mistake. but i wanna ask: if some1 buys a new picanto for $43k den registers it as a CNG car so 60% of $43k = $25.8k den OPC rebate $17k:

$25.8k - $17k = $8.8k only??? [laugh]

No. It is 60% of the OMV ie 40% rebate. Not 60% of the car price. If I'm not wrong, OMV of a Picanto is abt 10K or slightly lower. So its 43k - 4k - 17k = 22K. But dun forget that it cost abt 3K to install the CNG tank. So add 3K, the car cost abt 25k.

Anyway dun think Kia AD will offer the CNG option for a small car like Picanto of which there is zero space in the boot left after installation. So, if you buy the car that do not come with the CNG tank and you install the CNG tank outside yourself, you will not get any rebate.

That's how the rich gets richer. There is no rule governing the conversion, hence one can install the smallest allowable tank, but never use CNG throughout the entire COE lifespan.

Reminds me of this weekend plate LS400 driver that tears the OPC coupon everyday. Still cheaper than registering a full-time car.

the smallest tank to meet LTA requirement is HUGE i tell u [dizzy]

it only makes sense for the more expensive cars. because you have to factor in the installation costs. for a "mass-market" car, the savings will turn out to be less than $5k.

this saving would eventually be deducted from your PARF value anyway.

of course anything can be done. just don't get caught. cheating the government is quite a serious offense and no doubt someone will get caught doing this just to save a few thousand dollars. worth it or not, it's up to the person to decide. [lipsrsealed]

Hi guys,

1. Recently, we have been talking about people buying expensive performance cars that have been fitted with CNG to enjoy rebate. As known, the saving from the rebate is quite significant given the high price tags of these cars.

2. Do you think this is a loop hole for people to buy expensive performance cars at cheaper price? Note that it is not compulsory to use CNG though fitted with one. You can always switch between CNG and Petrol on the fly too. If one still uses petrol despite fitting with a CNG, won't this defeats its original purpose?

3. Is there a way to distinguish a car that has been fitted with CNG? One can always easily remove the CNG tank after installation. Can TP or LTA tell whether a car's CNG has been removed from the exterior?

Regards,

Is it a must to have CNG tank throughtout? Is it an offense to remove the CNG kit afte enjoying the rebate?

You green eye is showing

1. I'm just stating fact. I suppose I will also go the CNG route but until cylinders are lighter and cheaper and there are no shortage of CNG refill stattion then will consider.

2. For now, JB petrol is still cheaper and no loss of power.

Regards,

seems like this maniac is pretty sensitive about people discussing about expensive cars running on CNG... [sly]

what is wrong with him? [confused][confused][confused]

Its definately a loophole to get a similar car at a cheaper price. As long as the buying price is lower for same car, its an advantage already.

Which police or LTA will inspect your vehicle while on the road?

Even so, you can say the tank got gas leak and taken out for welding/repair.

The first inspection is on the 3rd year right?

Singapore has contracted with malaysia and indonesia to buy a minimum amount of CNG, its like take-or-pay contract. This could be the main reason why gov is promoting CNG.

I am sure the LTA scholars will come out with a permanent welding seal(like the weekend car plate seal) for the CNG gas tanks soon, to prevent people from removing the tank.

cng is not for small cars.

1. their omv is very low, say abt 10k, so rebate of 40% = $4k, cost of cng installation around 4k, so no savings.

2. their boot space already so small, where got space after installing the tanks?

3. how much can a small car consume in petrol?

cng is for big and expensive cars.

1. their high omv, say 80k for a merc s300, savings of 40% rebate = 32k. cost of cng is still 4k, so savings of 28k.

2. their boot space usually is empty cos they have other cars to do marketing etc.

3. if they do use cng, it can reduce their consumption costs a bit some how.

however, definitely a loophole for cheaper cars. actually i would suggest that the government seriously look into rewarding people who reli wanna go green for hybrid cars. y r hybrid cars only given 40% rebate too? hybrid cars should not b taxed, then more will buy hybrid cars (given that its omv is usually more than double the same size cars)
