Pisces69 6th Gear February 9, 2008 Share February 9, 2008 Yup. And all the different brands will also have difference in how dark it gets, how fast the colour changes, difference colours available ... that's all. FYI: The lenses only work in direct sunlight. So if you happen to be wearing a pair while driving, it does NOT change and reduce glare if that's one of the considerations. (from experience ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i have to disagree. transitions work by principle of UV exposure. So even if you are not in direct sunlight eg cloudy, it will still turn dark due to UV exposure. They dont work well in cars because the windshields have UV protection to a great extent. ======================== So basically they are NOT suitable as driving glasses then. ↡ Advertisement
Ano727 2nd Gear May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 Would like to revive this thread as I am thinking of getting transition lens soon when I go for replacement of my spectacles. Any bros and sis here have recent experience getting one lately? Would like to get an idea: 1. Where is a good place to get them (good price and workmanship)? 2. How much you paid for it? 3. What grade/degree of lens (I understand transition lens price go up with grade/degree)? 4. Anything I should be aware of? Yesterday, I asked one optical shop and they quoted me best price of $230 for simple decent titanium frame + midclass transition lens. For transition lens, they have the entry level, then midlevel (comes with Teflon scratch resistant protection), and highend is the Zeiss lens. Would appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks. Dwoon 1st Gear May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 Aren't we all in the same boat. I got my transitions + progressives a couple of months ago. But can't get used to them.... feel dizzy after awhile. So only put them on when I need to read small prints, especially at night. Walk also can like almost trip over my own feet. Did you get used to yours??? Got them last year and I was 39. People keep telling me I need them in the 40s. I got to use them earlier.

Transitional lens have a finite life-span so don't bother with expensive ones. My supposedly scratch-resistant lens also kenna fine scratches even when using microfiber cloth to clean. All hao-siao one.

Mine is also the transition+progressive(without a line in the middle of the lens) . There's a central of focus that you must get use to. During fitting , my optician tested my eyes and told me to slightly hold up my head while reading newspaper or small words and then level when I need to see far. I also suffer from your symptom initially but get over it in about a months time .I have been wearing mine (current is the 2 nd set) for 4 yrs+ liao . However why don't you go to another optician to get your eyesight plus lens power tested again?Maybe the lens power is not accurate?
Dwoon 1st Gear May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 Yes, it what you described. The bottom portion is 50 deg while the top portion is degree free..... So looking through the lens at its lower half has the most magnification. But even at 50 deg which I understand is the lowest setting, and with the top half supposedly w/o any degrees..... I feel everything is enlarged, to the extent I cannot gauge properly (like walking over uneven ground).... then after 10 min or so, I get dizzy (like motion sickness feeling)
Tjkbeluga 5th Gear May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 Yup, it's annoying when I went to Melbourne. The moment step out of the apartment only, fully darkens. Even late evening also dark. Also, go to pub and if there is UV fluorescence light, the one that make your white shirt glow, it will also somewhat darken. Makes me wonder, how come no one design a lense that make use of LCD liquid crystal. Then can turn on and off the tint easily... Hehehe...
Contax 1st Gear May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 I guess the circumstances are slightly different. Mine is short sighted + 'lao hua' so I'm literally 'forced' to wear it the moment I wake up. Still , I'm puzzle by ".... and with the top half supposedly w/o any degrees..... I feel everything is enlarged, to the extent I cannot gauge properly (like walking over uneven ground).... then after 10 min or so, I get dizzy (like motion sickness feeling) " it seems to me your whole lens is degreed . Dwoon 1st Gear May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 No lah..... the lens are not totally "degreed". For that matter. I've never managed to wear sunglasses as those even w/o degrees will also have a magnifying effect for me, making me dizzy.
Djrapper Neutral Newbie May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 pay 150 for it. Eye degree ard 425.

Ecclesiasm Neutral Newbie May 12, 2009 Share May 12, 2009 Used Transition lenses for more than 5 years. I would say that UV exposure in Singapore is not that strong. When i was in middle-east, dead sea, the glasses turned really really dark. I knew that I got the real McCoy, just that it is unter-utilised in sg. Works well, for normal usage. YEs, in car doesn't work because of your solar film. You can remove solar film (99% anti-UV) to maximise your transition lens while driving. The original should cost $180 upward for a pair, depending on power.

Ano727 2nd Gear May 13, 2009 Share May 13, 2009 Thanks for all the comments and informative feedback. Already had it done yesterday in one shop in Hougang mall, total of $220 for a pure titanium frame and branded transition lens. Degree not so high at 100/125. I think it's good deal already.
