Hi,

I am sure many have heard of transition lens. Has anyone heard of a substitute transition lens? I was at this spectacle shop and the salesgirl was telling me about something "photo frame" (not sure if i have heard correctly).

Is "photo frame" supposed to be good? Is it a perfect substitute for transition lens? Thanks for the replies.

In the 70s, I had a pair of "photogrey" glasses that darkened when in sunlight and lightened when indoors. "Photogrey" glasses are just light-sensitive just like the "new" transitions glasses....... Old tech with new names just like 1970s bell-bottom pants being recycled again in the 1990s/2000s.......

Bro,

I believe what's new about transitions lenses is that the lenses are made of plastic while the photogrey lenses of yesteryear only came in glass. Essentially they both work the same, just that the plastic lenses are lighter.

Cheers.

Yup. And all the different brands will also have difference in how dark it gets, how fast the colour changes, difference colours available ... that's all.

FYI: The lenses only work in direct sunlight. So if you happen to be wearing a pair while driving, it does NOT change and reduce glare if that's one of the considerations. (from experience [:/] )

If you are intending to get Transitions lens, get the genuine one.

There is a cheaper alternative which has a greenish tinge compared to the greyish thing of Transition brand.

Transition lens has a faster reaction time to sunlight when becoming dark and also turns clear faster.

Just my experience, recently switched from "replica" to Transition lens.

Get the sales girl show you how fast it change how how dark it change and the color as it change. plus does the substitute have the same UV protection(UV.A UV.B) scratch resistance? And while indoor is it as clear? It is always best to compare yourself, you will be the one paying and wearing it at the end of the day.flowerface.gif

(try to go outside in the sun so u can see it change)thumbsup.gif

please take note:

"Transitions lenses contain patented photochromic dyes which cause the lens to activate - or darken - when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight"

thus, sometime when the sunlight is not strong but the UV is strong, the glasses will take very dark.

Yes. I tried them b4 in the 70's. Not practical for driving cos the sun must actually shine directly & touch the lens for it to change colour. My wifey didn't know & bought them. She was wondering why they never get dark when she was in the car.

Also the change from clear to dark & viceversa takes quite some time. Can b very dangerous cos when u go from bright to dark, u cannot see anything. [cool]

After I explained to her how they work, she say "Chey", $1K wasted [thumbsdown] . Still my $10 polaroid clip-ons r the best. [thumbsup]

I still go with those Polaroid clip-ons. Instant dark or light with just a flip.

i have to disagree. transitions work by principle of UV exposure. So even if you are not in direct sunlight eg cloudy, it will still turn dark due to UV exposure. They dont work well in cars because the windshields have UV protection to a great extent.
