The MOE agrees that good teachers are not motivated by pay alone. They get the satisfaction from seeing their pupils learn, helping to change their lives and working with colleagues to improve what schools can provide for the next generation.

However, there is no trade-off between paying teachers competitively and sustaining their commitment and love for teaching. Even good and passionate teachers are lost to the service when the pay differential grows too wide. If the Education Service failed to keep in step with relevant private sector salaries, it would harm both the teaching profession and the quality of education in our schools.

Then is good ministers motivated by pay alone, since they keep saying they can earn much more in private sectors??? [confused]

thanks for clarifying the point! [thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup] as a civil servant and a teacher myself im getting sick and tired of lazy bums who think that I should not be earning what I do cos I should be doing it for the passion. Yeah, so who's gonna feed me. I wish ppl who think teachers should do it for the passion alone should put their money where their mouth is and quit their well paying jobs and be a teacher and not accept any pay rises! It's very easy to tok.. not easy to do...

and btw.. the newspaper didnt reflect the pay rise for teachers accurately... it is in fact less than stated... thru manipulation of the figures.. ST over inflated it...

as for ministers.. well... if we can pay them so much.. i dont see why other civil servants should earn any less.. we're not a charity... if u cant pay... we go elsewhere.. dats life..

I agree to that. Nowadays more graduates are joining the teaching force not out of passion but just that their degree cant get them anyway. Teaching is the best option for them.

But nowadyas teachers workload is getting more n more n i think their pay increment is justify but not so for the civil servant lor esp those ministers.
