Applying for Singaporean Citizenship

My family is actually Malaysian PR and recently my mother has been in a dilemma as to whether she should apply for Singaporean citizenship.. My dad's name has been used for my uncle's stuffs in Malaysia so he thinks it is troublesome to transfer the name here and there. However I've tried the online eligibility assessment tool and it says that we are not eligible for Singaporean citizenship (applicants are my 2 sisters, one in p6 and one in sec 2, my mother, and me). I think it's because of her low salary of about 500 dollars per month.

 

But yet there are some friends of my mother who encourage her to apply for citizenship since 3 children are applying at a go.. some claim that having more children to apply for citizenship at a time increases the chances of a successful application. So I'm just trying to seek some opinions and advices here, to see whether there has been cases like mine which have (hopefully) succeeded before. Thanks

what's yr reasons for getting spore citizenships?

 

personally, if i'm in yr shoes, i will just stay as PR (give myself a back door, just in case....)

 

there is no real benefits to getting spore citizenships, except that you pay cheaper HDB interest rates for HDB loans....

 

in fact there is more negative points than positive benefits

 

if i'm a PR, i still can go back to malaysia if anything happens here..... or i earn enough S$ in the future, and can go back to malaysia to enjoy my retirement. S$ compared to $RM.... alot of difference in currency exchange

 

there are thousands of foreigners and PRs here, but how many really plan to convert to spore citizens?

 

i'm not been a wet blanket here, but i cant see any real benefits to becoming spore citizenship.

The online assessment is Flawed. Try putting a HIGH salary and you will STILL get rejected. I've even tried putting "minister salary" @ $300K and i still got rejected for my wife who is a foreigner.

 

Citizenship/PR is based on case-by-case basis. someone earning $1.5K a month, low education and get PR status. Bankrupt with foreigner wife can get PR status for his wife.

 

I suggest you go thru the PR application in ICA with proper covering letter etc., yr sister's papers/proof that she's still studying (in Singapore or malaysia ???) Don't loose heart in applying even after getting rejected... keep trying until you get it, better still approach yr MP in your area and see whether they're able to help on yr issue ( then you owe them yr votes when the time comes )

The points below cannot be considered as real benefits but I believe they are part of some ppl's considerations:

 

1) Cheaper passport than Msia? SG is SGD70. Msia is RMB300

2) SG passport big. Go holiday to a few countries and no need visa.

3) Can buy new HDB flats? (at least 1 sgporean is needed for new application)

4) Cheaper tickets when buying Star Cruise tickets? PR and foreigners more expensive.

I don't think it's flawed. That's probably what the govt wants exactly. Govt probably wants it to be based on the merits of the subject. ie, try to give yourself a 1K salary and try putting your spouse(subject) with monthly salary of 2.5K.

Truthfully speaking, what do you think you will get out of Spore citizenship?

 

Just remember what you get now, you will be required to pay back in kind maybe many folds.

You indicate that your father is a malaysian PR? Meaning, he is a holding a Singapore citizenship? Or are you referring to Singapore PR?

 

With your mum's salary, I think the chances of getting the citizenship is low. Nonetheless, you will never know unless your try.

 

Do take note that the result might take as long as 6months.

 

By the way, are you taking your O levels this year?

Chances go up if (a) Grad/degree holder (b) of certain races © Middle-income/rich (d) Singapore PR for more than 5 years

 

Our application process quite opaque, so it is case-by-case. Best is get the best qualified to apply first..

 

From what I read above, your mum is Malaysian PR or Malaysian Citizen ? Holding Singapore PR ?

No way to apply for citizenship direct (unless some 'special' circumstances). Must be PR first..

Oops my fault I mean my family is Singaporean PR, but my parents are from (born in) Malaysia.

 

Actually there are quite a few reasons (mostly financial ).. My school fees have increased to 360 per month for PRs, then there are also many many incentives for Singaporeans, like first priority when it comes to buying new flats, medical discounts at polyclinics, etc. But the main reason is because it is very likely for my sisters and I to be enlisted for the Malaysian NS. Both of my cousins (male and female) have tioed it.. Even though it is just 3 months but I don't really know how to speak Malay (only took it for 2 years in sec school).

 

And yup I am taking my O levels this year, but only higher mother tongue, choo choo train mah

Hmm.. just to input some infor. i had relatives from m'sia, holding sg pr also. Their sons went to serve NS, and parents were given citizenships.

Sorry i dunno the exact details, but this is roughly what happen to my relative's family.

You mention you were taking O level this year, meaning you are at a suitable age to serve NS. Maybe you can consider that option. Pardon me, if im mistaken or wrong abt the infor.

I see.. but now my parents are more concerned with my sisters and me getting enlisted for Malaysian NS.. We have been out of malaysia since we are born, so if we were to go back now, I really have no idea how we are going to survive

You know when you will be enlisted? i heard m'sia ns is randomly selected, you n your sisters have been selected?? Actually if you want more confirm details, you should go down to the ICA, rather then ask ard in MCF. (IMO) Do it quick.

Malaysia NS got reservist anot? How many years? Its 3 months versus 2 years plus 18 years of reservist.

 

I believe you have only seen the superficial benefits of our citizenship at your tender age.

 

Try calculating how much more it would cost you to finish your desired level of studies. There is always chances to opt for scholarship if you put in aalot of effort.

 

You can always earn back your money but you cannot change back to your country of origin again.

You and your sis don't want to serve M'sia NS for 3 months, but all your sons have to serve Sillypore NS for 13 years. Which would you prefer? You suffer or your children suffer?

Imo it is still easier to serve NS here in Singapore than in Malaysia, even though the service period is very different. I mean like going back to a place which you aren't really familiar with, spending 3 months with different people, isn't exactly a good thing right?

That is exactly what your sons will have to go through here during the 3-4 months Basic Military Training.
