"This new Fit comes with either of two 'new' engines, actually a development of the engines that powers the outgoing 1st generation model. They are the 1.3l L13A SOHC i-VTEC and the 1.5l L15A SOHC i-VTEC. The new L13A has discarded the i-DSI technology in favour of i-VTEC and delivers the superior low-rpm torque of its predecessor along with a lot more power in the high rpm range, as well as enhanced fuel economy in everyday driving. It is now 16-valves in configuration, still SOHC but features enhanced intake performance and DBW (drive-by-wire) and delivers a max power of 73kW (100ps), 14ps or 16% more power than the outgoing L13A i-DSI. Using the 12V/16V VTEC implementaion and new ECU tuning helps it deliver this max power along with a class-leading 24km/l in fuel economy (Japan 10.15 rating).

 

The new 1.5l L15A SOHC i-VTEC delivers superior fuel economy combined with good torque throughout the rpm range. Using the 'power SOHC VTEC' technology first used on the D15B engines of the 5th generation (1991-1995) Honda Civics, it now delivers a max power of 88kW or 120ps, 10ps or 9% more power than the outgoing L15A SOHC VTEC. Along with this, it still delivers a fuel economy of 19.6km/l!"

So the i-DSI engine will be obsolete? Honda is always improving their technology unlike Toyota that simply transfer the engine from the old vios to the new one

Its funny you should say that, because ever since Honda left the B-series engines behind they have taken a huge step back. Where they made the magic 100bhp/litre mark back in the 90s, they make a measly 120 with this latest incarnation of the L-series.

 

Should we really be celebrating? Maybe the engine is greener than before, maybe it uses less fuel, we really need to put that quoted figure to the test.

 

You need to remember that Toyota only introduced the 1NZ engine into their platform around the time of the G9 Corolla, and engines do cross from one chassis generation to another. Case in point: the B16 spanned the EF, EG, and EK generations before being replaced by the D-series. Were they being lazy?

to me, a good airplane engine does not mean a good car engine........they have different requirements.....

For that matter, Honda's noted for their smaller capacity engines only. Beyond 2 litres they aren't all that hot. Is there a significant engine beyond that in Honda's lineup that stands toe to toe with engines such as the Nissan RB26, Toyota 2JZ, with that kind of potential?

it means that honda R&D is good... constantly working on new technologies, until they can even make planes with their technologies.

Personally i quite happy that honda is doing away with IDSI engines. Not that its lousy or whatever, but to me, a honda car without Vtec, is not a honda car.

 

I see Honda=Vtec. No Vtec=not a honda.

 

The driving "feeling" is different la, between vtec and idsi.......

Actually you're quite right with that. The 1500cc capacity is a bit of an odd capacity considering the old established standard was 1600cc. Its probably the Japanese tax structure but I don't know for sure anyway.

 

However it doesn't take away the fact that Honda has also carried engines over across platforms in the past.

 

It remains to be seen whether Toyota will be able to ante up to the new benchmark power rating that Honda's set for this class of engine, perhaps with a VVTi-L development of the basic VVTi engine.

 

That technology exists in Toyota - its only implementation.

Honda's i-DSI twin spark technology is somewhat similar to Alfa Romeos twin-spark series engines b4 the JTS series and they are developed around the same period.

 

I think Honda is trying out the twin spark technology and later both Honda & Alfa abandon the twin-spark. Coincidence??

 

It may be due to emission issues and FC issues.

VVTL-i does not meet new environmental requirement, I doubt Toyota will refresh this technology. They are concentrating on Dual VVT-i system which controls both intake and exhaust valve timing, duration. This is the current global car maker trend.
