Thirsty hippo makes no sense.. even in home use...

the only time it makes sense is if u put it in an AIR TIGHT environemnt and it stays dry as long as no outside air comes in.. buying thirsty hippo is like trying to suck the water out of the earth's atmosphere.. you cannot do it..

Few weeks ago, about half a litre of water emptied itself into my boot. Although the boot carpet was taken out and sun. Somehow everytime I get into the parked car, I am greeted by a musky, wet socks smell. Only after turning on the car so that the activated carbon aircon filter and ioniser can kick in then the smell is removed. As I did not wish fungus to grow in hidden corners of the car, I just put in a chiong thirsty hippo and the smell no longer there. About 2 weeks already and the chiong hippo container is about 30% filled with water. No more smell also. [thumbsup]

The total time the car door is open per day is only around 5 minutes at most, the rest of the time is rather enclosed environment. If the car is such a open environment, I think the container would be completely filled by now. Also if it is so 'open' we won't be seeing so many rocking fogged up cars park at dark corners of the country at night. [laugh] Furthermore, whatever atmospheric moisture that get in is minimal compared to pouring more than half a liter of water onto the boot.

You may be pushing the point that these drying agent is not necessary for normal situations, but I am sharing the experience of my "abnormal" situation.

Whatever it is...There definitely is extra moisture within the car after the bottle of water emptied into the boot, else there wouldn't be the foul smell after the event. And the dehumidifying agent did does it work in getting rid of that smell. How come 30% filled? Remember I said I sun the removable carpet in the boot, which is where most of the water is. There must still be somewhere else the water goes and I did not sun it. One possible location might be the back of my rear seat. [laugh]

Guys,

Thanks for all your reply, I agree that the Thirsty Hippo do works as I have seen water accumulating after few weeks of putting it on my rear dashboard, it may be ugly to leave it there but guess it is the best place to suck up water within the cabin.

I have spilled some washing detergent on my boot carpet and did not managed to dry it so under hot day, I can see some moisture below the carpet, I decided to put another Thirsty Hippo in the boot area. thumbsup.gif

I put it at the centre console, where I can stuff it in. Good stuff, can last me abt 2 mths b4 it becomes full. You will be surprised at the amount of water collected.

i'm not surprised it collects water from CAR interior.

i use one in a drawer to store my camera equipment. less than 2 months full liao. what more a car (which isn't airtight, big volume, always has fresh and humid air going in etc etc)

in your case i agree. for daily use, it's just a waste of money.

the aircon is dry enuff without making it worse by using dehumidifier. a thirsty hippo, when no longer thirsty, becomes a full hippo prone to spilling its contents too [laugh]

Turbocharged

for car that I seldom drive, I will keep some hippos on the floor inside the cabin

otherwise it will be mouldy at everywhere I touched in the car, steering wheel, seat, switches, handles, gear knob etc

this is 2 months worth of water (4 x thirsty hippos)
