Esters has been around for a long time too, but the time of discovery doesn't indicate the method of producing the oil, does it?

So is PAO now no longer synthesized, but extracted from crude?

It was not discovered. It was developed by German 4 their fighter plane.

I don't think it is synthesize anymore. That's why API certified them. API don't certified Grp V oil.

Did i get it right? API only certify non-synthesized oils? That is, API do not certify true synthetic oils, regardless of additive content and such?

Actually i wasn't too particular about when or who made the oil, but more of how, why and how it fare. To my understanding, its not that before WWII, no synthesis is possible, and as such since PAO is available before WWII, it has to be refined through crude. Infact till today, i still understand PAO as a true synthetic base oil. Am i right to understand that, you considered PAO similar to Group III oils, oils refined from crude but yet named under the synthetic family? Don't get me wrong, i am trying to learn the process in which, PAO can be refined from crude.

Group V oils are too general, they contain the worst oils and some of the best. I for one, won't talk about the certification or use of a group V oil, but the specific various family in the Group.
