Kelpie 2nd Gear December 24, 2007 Share December 24, 2007 1. Sometimes, someone will mention that they need a heavier set of wheels which provide better stability during cornering. Others might felt that a car with lighter set of wheels will degrade its road holding ability. 2. However, rims, tyres and the brakes are just unsprung weight, which are all not supported by the suspension and is more proned to road shock and cornering forces. By reducing the weight of your rims/tyres, you get more precise steering and cornering. Hence, the weight of your wheels will affect your car's road holding ability. 3. Hence, performance tyres and light weight rims do provide better control to the cars. Regards, ↡ Advertisement

Kyousuke Neutral Newbie December 24, 2007 Share December 24, 2007 Heavier rims do not help in cornering. Proper suspension design, toe in and camber angles does.
Felipe 3rd Gear December 24, 2007 Share December 24, 2007 it shouldn't help in cornering. it helps look better though if the rims are bigger
Donut Supercharged December 24, 2007 Share December 24, 2007 heavier rims/tyres will only help in high speed travelling and braking. not in cornering good cornering needs good suspension and lowered car height, for a start......

How do you derive that heavier rims/tyres help in high speed and braking ? Isn't it the lighter it is, the quicker to put to stop? Also good tyres compound and tread design help in speed, braking but not weight. Regards,
Lucaswh 1st Gear December 25, 2007 Share December 25, 2007 The most important component of good cornering and handling is grippy tyres. Followed by a suspension lowered by coilovers. Light weight rims good for good FC, pick up and a lighter steering wheel. however, i can't over emphasize the importance of good tyres, which people tend to neglect. A lowered suspension is not for everyone and is not a neccessity on our roads apart from look and tackle steep corners (how often?). I used coilover but I would rather use stock suspension with reinforced struct bars, anti-roll bars and etc. More comfortable and no less effective then a coilover. You would appreciate your stock suspension if driving long distances for hours. Of course, tracking would be a different ball game. 2. Yes, we could not over emphasize the importance of good tyres. Thats the usual 1st time I change when I got a car. Regards,
Lucaswh 1st Gear December 25, 2007 Share December 25, 2007 yep. coilovers are not for everyone. However, there are coilovers which are soft enough for daily street use for example TEIN. Other coilovers like BC are hard and would serve well on track but not comfy for daily driving. ARB is a value for money handling mod, especially if your car handling is totally stock, an ARB will make a significant difference for its price. Personally, I would feel more secure in the corners with a lower center of gravity and grippy tyres..would go for an ARB after i've upgraded my tyres.
