Hi All,

Is it advisable to get second hand rims? Am interested in a particular rim which is very expensive. Is it worthwhile to get them brand new? Or it's better to just get a second hand set? Is it common for people to buy second hand rims? Any advice would be good.

Thanks

Nina

just buy at a good price, worst case scenario if it doesn t work out sell off again, you won t lose as much as you bought it secondhand in the first place.

worth taking the risk in my opinion, but of course shop for a good price and do a close inspection of the rim to look for cracks and etcs.

If you are the type that like to change your rims every now and then....go for 2nd hand. At least its easier on the pocket.

For performance rims like forged rims...its better that you get it new. At least you know that it is not damaged. Forged rims are light weight but they are easiler to damaged too...just speed thru a porthole and its likely that the rims willl be deformed. But it can be repaired...how good the job is depend on the person.

But if its normal alloy rims....its ok to get 2nd hand.

not worth it...visual inspection cannot tell if the rims is balanced....some warped rims cannot be balanced no matter how many weight you attach to the rim.......

The only way is to get the seller to show you at the tyre shop where u are swapping to do balancing before committing....if the discount is not much....may not be worth the effort....especially if you are going for japanese forged rims

just get new for piece of mind....

I'm ok with used rims especially those expensive marque.

For example , a particular OZ racing rims I was looking for cost around $350 per piece , I got it from my "regular and trusted " tyres shop for $250 for 4 pcs due owner upsizing.

Forged rim is stronger. it would tend to deform rather than crack under impact. Casted rim is weaker and is more prone to cracking under impact. but I thk if one hits a big pothole at high speed, both forged and casted rims would be gone

2nd hand rims is only adviseable for stock rims...e.g:- RX8 18', bmw's , ... from experience these rims are heavy but much tougher....

I'm responding to Ghostrider's remark that forged rim is weaker than cast rim.

and when going thru pothole at high speed, forged rim might go thru with it being out of shape but casted rim have a higher chance to crack and when it crack during high speed, it's not going to be a very pleasant sight [sweatdrop]

you might want to tell us what sort of rim you are getting. It's easier to tell you this way. otherwise, it's going to be very general answer here

My friend told me, in Malaysia he saw a BMW broke a RIM... the Tire and RIM flew off leaving the Centre Hub on the car. I wanted to buy a 3 or 4 Spooks (is that what you call the Support between the Rim and Hub?). He strongly advised against it. due to the above case.

I was looking a budget rim (even consider 2nd hand ones) but was tempted by the shop keeper... I bought a set of RIM that someone had placed $100 deposit but never turn up to claim it. Shopkeeper suspect that the person might have credit problem so unable to secure a loan.
