it's about the maps...

 

how often are the updates? need to pay for updates?

When you buy a GPS, don't be attracted by the features, the look and the price. The most important thing to consider, which many newbies failed to realise, is how good is the software (map) support. Most brands promise u update but they don't tell u honestly how often they update their map or how much you gotta pay for each update. Usually, most brands don't update their maps frequently. Most of them do so about once or twice a year and you need to pay for each update. When comes to GPS, Garmin is the most trusted and reliable brand in Malaysia and Singapore. Garmin have an online (mapsingmaps.com) community, consisting of Singaporeans and Malaysians, who are dedicated to creating and updating the maps of My and Sg and distribute it free. No other brands have such a community to provide u with free maps. You need for pay for your map!!!!

I think Holux map updates are free.. so far, I had not paid for any updates..

All these GPS features are more or less the same. Get one with free map updates like Garmin which is more important.

the main concern is not the free map but is the frequency of updating

ok.. but i think once every one or two month will be quite enough for me.. I dun even use my GPS as often as they update. Not even in Malaysia..

Actually, I had wanted to get a portable DVD player in my van ...

Then I thot ... where got space ...

since the fr pax seat got SRS airbag so there's going to b no spare space ....

Next idea, install DVD also cost $599.

 

so I thot, buy a MP4 with big screen (3.5" above) ... I see the price, might as well get a GPS which can play picture and songs instead ...

Holux 53CL can play music, mp3 format.. no slideshow pics or video.. i think GPS registered in singapore does not have these functions or disabled..

 

Maps update frequency is around one to two months from mapking.. they will send you a email, linking to the updates.. The maps will consist of mapking maps and malsing map.. hope these helps..

No point if you have a very good GPS but without Up to date Map!

I beleive GPS user will agreed with me.

 

If you use in Singapore, consider MapKing Singapore map( up to date 9th Nov 2007)

If in Malaysia,

use Garmin Format,Malsing All-in-one GMAPSUPP map (up to date 10 Nov 2007)or

Mapking Format, Malsing-WMal for WM PDA (up to date Oct 22, 2007)
