Redstorm 1st Gear December 15, 2007 Share December 15, 2007 i was quoted $590 for garmin 310. any idea is the price with map or without Obviously, $590 for Garmin 310 is w/out the orginal Garmin map. The map is optional but you gotta pay $200 to purchase it. ↡ Advertisement

You can buy a Garmin map of Australia here or when u are there. It has nothing to do with getting Sg/My map to authorise. The Australian map comes in a SD card and just swap the card and u are good to go.
Redstorm 1st Gear December 16, 2007 Share December 16, 2007 thanks, think it's better to get without map right To me and many ppl who have bought their Garmin sets, it is better to buy without a map. I have friend who bought the map and now it's like a white elephant since they are using the better and more detailed malsingmaps. Why waste $200 on an original Garmin map when u can get the malsingmaps for free. The June 07 version is free for downloading and for subsequent new maps, u need to contribute in order to get the unlock code to unlock the new map. Dafansu Turbocharged December 16, 2007 Share December 16, 2007 for those who bought the garmin maps, are there any updates available or every update needs to buy a new map which cost about $
Redstorm 1st Gear December 16, 2007 Share December 16, 2007 (edited) for those who bought the garmin maps, are there any updates available or every update needs to buy a new map which cost about $200 No worth paying for the original Garmin map 'cos it covers only the major cities such as Singapore, JB, Melaka, KL, Penang, etc. where malsingmaps covers the whole of Peninsula Malaysia, East Malaysia and Singapore. Besides being not very detail, the update is not as frequent as malsingmaps. The latter updates their maps almost every month whereas the original Garmin map update only 2 or 3 times a year. Although you don't need to buy a new map each time they date their map, you gotta pay for each update of the Garmin map. Malsingmaps is free! Prosumer Clutched December 18, 2007 Share December 18, 2007 Quick question: Can I confirm that the free malsing maps does not support searching by postal code, and only the original maps does?
Tonyleonghk Neutral Newbie December 18, 2007 Share December 18, 2007 Malsing maps does not search by postal code. Original dunno leh, but heard alot of comment that malsing maps are more detailed than original. I am using Malsing map on my Garmin Nuvi 200. I have tried before HP iPAQ PDA fones.... no fight. Garmin is definitely better.
Prosumer Clutched December 18, 2007 Share December 18, 2007 u cannot search by postal code. sometimes bit of hassle and frustration to do search because the free version do not have a universal standard on how contributors name the roads and place. I always search the place in advance before i start my journey. the original maps (additional 200bucks with 1 free updates) can search by postal code... i havent try it before though. This above post I'm referring to. I'm deciding on a dedicated gps system now; have been using N95 which is good enough for me, but I really need one that does postal code search. Seems like Garmin is the way to go, but only original maps can do? But original map not free and not as good/details... headache
Kelvgoh 1st Gear December 18, 2007 Share December 18, 2007 Bro, I'll go the Holux direction (with Mapking Maps/Software). I'm using the Shinco system with Mapking Maps and find that the software and maps are quite accurate. The Mapking Maps are licensed from SLA (Singapore Land Authority) and the software allows search by Postal Code. The interface is also very pleasant and easy to use/see. Ken_leong 2nd Gear December 19, 2007 Share December 19, 2007 (edited) Agree. Holux gps with SLA Mapking map are quite accurate and importantly, free monthly or bi-monthly map updates. Edited December 19, 2007 by Ken_leong
